JEREMIAH – CHAPTER 4

Tuesday, January 26, 2020, the Year of Our Lord

Pastor Carolyn Sissom

The Lord Lives, in truth, in judgment and in Righteousness.

  1. 4: 1-2:  Call to Return
  2. 3-4:       Circumcision of Heart
  3. 5-8:       Coming of the invader (Destroyer of the Gentiles)
  4. 9-10:     Corruption of Leadership
  5. 11-13:   Coming of the Judgment
  6. 14-18:   Cause of the Judgment
  7. 19-22:   Cry of the Prophet
  8. 23-28:   Chaos in the Land
  9. 29-30:   Confusion of the People.
  10. 31:         Travail of the remnant.

4:1-2:  If you will return, O Israel, says the Lord, if you will return to Me, and if you will put away your abominations out of My sight, then you shall not be moved.  And you shall swear, The Lord lives, in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness; and the nations will bless themselves in Him, and in Him shall they glory.

The people did not respond to the prophet’s previous words, so he continues his impassioned plea.

Judah could still escape captivity by returning to God through a change of her ways.

God continues into Chapter 4 offering the words of confession and repentance that will open the passage to His mercy for Israel.

This is a big “if.”  It is repeated three times with two conditions.  This same formula will work today!  National repentance beginning in the churches is the only avenue open to the nations.  Short of this captivity is just down the road.

We are standing in a serious time in the history of our nation.

There are multiple areas under attack to break the power of our nation:

1.      Christianity

2.      Family

3.      Economy

4.      Defense

5.      Education

6.      Freedom of speech

7.      Freedom of Assembly

8.      Free elections

9.      Sovereign borders.

10.  Law and Order

The loss of anyone of these would put our nation into captivity by the opposing power to destroy our liberties.

Who is our enemy?  Foreign nations? The plague? Our own government? Yes, to all three.  These enemies are attacking our nation to destroy our nation from within

and without.  The United States is in a global war as well as a war within our own government being waged against the American people.

“A strong nation will not surrender its sovereignty.  Americans will not agree to turn over our monetary system, military or courts to a world body made up of governments which have been despotic to their own people.  But congress has a 3-trillion-dollar-bill in the house to give billions of dollars to Russia, Syria, Communist China, and Iran through the International Monetary System.  If Americans can be brought to the point where they are suffering from a collapse of their economy and from a breakdown in civil order, they will surrender and cower down.  When Americans stand in bread lines and face anarchy in their streets, they will be more willing to give up sovereignty in return for assistance from the World Bank and the UN peacekeeping forces…the government and media will spin this as social democracy.”

4:3-4: Break up your fallow ground, and sow not among thorns. Circumcise yourselves to the Lord.  Take away the foreskins of your heart.

Judah’s heart was not yet changed.  She was still full of the seeds of her former wickedness.  The prophet’s anguish is here revealed as he sees the judgment falling.  Jeremiah promises if these measures are not implemented, God will bring to their doorsteps “great destruction.”

Jeremiah 4: 5-9: Declare in Judah, and publish in Jerusalem; and say, blow the trumpet in the land: cry, gather together, and say, assemble yourselves, and let us go into the defensed cities.  Set up the standard toward Zion: retire, stay not: for I will bring evil from the north, and a great destruction. The lion is come up from his thicket, and the destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way; he is gone forth from his place to make your land desolate; and your cities shall be laid waste, without an inhabitant.  For this gird yourself with sackcloth, lament and howl: for the fierce anger of the LORD is not turned back from us. It shall come to pass at that day, says the LORD, that the heart of the king shall perish, and the heart of the princes; and the priests shall be astonished, and the prophets shall wonder.

All of this language expressed alarm in view of impending war---Blow the Trumpet; Cry; Gather Together; Go into the defensed cities; Stay not outside.  The destroyer of the Gentiles is on his way to make the land desolate!  At that time the destroyer’s tool for destruction was Nebuchadnezzar who conquered many nations, took the Jews captive and founded the Babylonian empire of Daniel 2: 37-38; 7:4.

The unholy trinity comes to kill, steal and destroy.  In the late 1980’s the LORD gave me dreams and a revelation about the Destroyer.  I have an in-depth teaching on The Destroyer on the website.

The destroyer’s name is “Abaddon.”  In the Greek tongue, his name is “Apollyon.”

Thus, says the Lord:  They had a King over them which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue has his name Apollyon…and the sixth angel sounded his trumpet, and I heard a voice coming from the horns of the golden altar that is before God.  It is said to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, “Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates.”  And the four angels who had been kept ready for this very hour and day and month and year were released to kill a third of mankind…and the number of the horsemen were 200,000,000…The rest of mankind that were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and wood – Idols that cannot see or hear or walk.  Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts (Rev. 9: 11-21).

Abaddon is first mentioned in the bible in Job 26:6 R.S.Sheol (death) is naked before God and Abaddon (destruction) has no covering.”  Abaddon is also named as destruction in Job 28:22 and Proverbs 15:11.

Abaddon is further identified as the prince of Grecia in Daniel 10: 20-21:

“In the Hebrew prince is from the word “sar” which means a chief ruler.”

It is my belief since the Lord showed me the destroyer and his method of operations, that this spirit was released on the earth in the late 1980’s.  This is my personal opinion and if you disagree with me, I will not impose that on anyone as doctrine.

“The Prince of Grecia is the satanic ruler prince of the Grecian Empire that caused Alexander the Great to be so successful in 13 years as to destroy the Medo-Persian Empire completely.  In Jeremiah and Daniel, the Medes are foreseen as the conquerors of Babylon.” (Dake’s Annotated Reference Bible).

The sins throughout scripture that reap destruction in addition to those listed in Rev. 9: 20-21 are murder, magic arts, pride, adultery, whoredom, murmuring, and sexual immorality; an uncontrolled tongue; and a man who robs his parents, (Job. 31:3; Prov. 28:24, 6:32; 31:3; 16:28 and 1 Co. 10:10)

So how does this affect us?  Jeremiah has instructions for us as he tried to prepare Israel for her coming judgment, so are we prepared.  Israel’s sin of idolatry; and following their vain imaginations plus all of the above-mentioned sins brought this judgment on the nation.

Thus, says the Lord:

  1. Break up your fallow ground! (idle, uncultivated, unproductive)
  2. Sow not among the thorns!
  3. Circumcise yourselves to the Lord! (remove all stubbornness)
  4. Take away the foreskin of your heart!
  5. Declare, publish and blow the trumpets!
  6. Cry, gather together and say assemble yourselves!
  7. Set up a standard toward Zion!
  8. Retire to defensed cities, stay not outside.
  9. Wash your heart from wickedness!
  10. Make mention to the nations!

It is my belief that the destroyer has been released from the abyss and his 200,000,000-demon army has been released upon mankind.  Judgment begins at the household of God.  It is God’s way to start at the top and go down.  I believe the sixth angel has sounded the sixth trumpet (written by Carolyn Sissom in the 1980’s).

The Good News is God has made a way for us through the blood of Jesus Christ.  He always makes a provision for his remnant before the need arises.

God’s provision from destruction is first repentance and obedience.

Secondly, the blood on the doorpost protected the Israelites from the destroying angel.

Further God sent His Word and delivered them from destruction. (Psalm 107:20)

God promised protection from destruction for those who would commit their cause to him. (Job 5: 21-22)

Tithing is spiritual warfare against destruction.

Malachi 3:11: I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes and he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground.”

There are many other provisions, but last and most important is chapter 10:1 in Revelation:

And I saw another mighty angel come down from heaven clothed with a cloud and a rainbow was upon his head and his face was as it were the sun and his feet as pillars of fire…

This angel is Jesus.  As he prepares His Bride for His coming, we are going to experience an outpouring of His Glory, the power of His Might, a harvest of souls, an opening up of the revelation of His Word that has been sealed by all the prophets, Daniel, Jeremiah, Isaiah and John. Etc.

When Jesus comes with Michael contending with Him, they will fight against the Prince of Grecia, the destroyer.  God will raise up His final battle axe and weapons of war against the destroyer.  In Ezekiel 9: 1-6, we have God’s promise that the righteous have been marked by God’s seal for deliverance:

Jeremiah 4:11-14: Then said I, Ah, Lord GOD! Surely, you have greatly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, you shall have peace; whereas the sword reaches unto the soul.  At that time shall it be said to this people and to Jerusalem, A dry wind of the high places in the wilderness toward the daughter of my people, not to fan, nor to cleanse.  Even a full wind from those places shall come unto me: now also will I give sentence against them. Behold, he shall come up as clouds, and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind: his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe unto us! for we are spoiled.  O Jerusalem, wash your heart from wickedness, that you may be saved. How long shall your vain thoughts lodge within you?

Sunday morning as the presence of the Lord covered our congregation, the Spirit of the Lord affirmed us that in His presence, we had laid down our egos, vain glory, and vanity of religion.  I feel like that is also a commendation of vain thoughts.

I choose to interpret Jeremiah’s arguing or questioning God as not God deceiving the people with false prophets, but the people were believing they would have peace based on God’s covenant promises to their nation.  It was the assumption of the people that all will be well because they were God’s chosen people.   Jeremiah here does not accuse the prophets, he is saying, “God deceived.”  As we know, God cannot deceive.  He is truth!  The people and government leaders are reaping the evil they have sown.

The winds of judgment are blowing.  It is Nebuchadnezzar who will come up as clouds and his chariots shall be as a whirlwind; his horses are swifter than eagles.

Jeremiah 4:15-18: A voice is announcing from Dan, proclaiming disaster from the hills of Ephraim.  Tell this to the nations.  Proclaim it to Jerusalem; a besieging army is coming from a distant land raising a war cry against the cities of Judah.  They surround her like men guarding a field because she has rebelled against me, declares the LORD. Your own conduct and actions have brought this upon you.  This is your punishment.  How bitter it is!  how it pierces to the heart!

Jeremiah’s words and the Lord’s words are almost interchangeable.  It is difficult to determine where God ends speaking and the prophet begins and vice versa.

“For Jeremiah the pain is unbearable long before the judgment comes.  He already experiences its reality in prophetic vision.  Long before Nebuchadnezzar’s armies march from Babylon, he has heard the battle cry, watched the troops advancing, seen the terror of his people, and stood among the dead and dying” (Michael L. Brown).

4: 19-22: My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart makes a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because you have heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.  Destruction upon destruction is cried; for the whole land is spoiled: suddenly are my tents spoiled, and my curtains in a moment.  How long shall I see the standard, and hear the sound of the trumpet:  For my people are foolish, they have not known me; they are sottish children, and they have no understanding; they are wise to do evil, but to do good they have no knowledge.”

If Americans do not realize this day is not approaching our nation.  It is here.

4:16:  Make mention to the nations; behold, publish against Jerusalem, that watchers come from afar country and raise their voice against the cities of Judah.

Foreign nations’ intelligence gathering knows as much about our government operations as we do.  They also have looked into our homes, businesses, and churches.  They spy on us.

Jer. 4:18: Your ways and your doings have procured these things for you; this is your wickedness, because it is bitter, because it reaches to your heart.

To procure something signifies ownership by design.

Increases in crime, debauchery and moral degradation are not casual; they are symptoms of a much deeper issue.

To Israel, God had determined His judgments and set-in motion a point of no return.

“The prophet as a person is overwhelmed by sympathy for God and sympathy for man.  Standing before the people, he pleaded for God; standing before God, he pleaded for the people.” (Michael L. Brown).

Jeremiah 4: 23-26:  I looked at the earth and it was formless and empty; and at the heavens, and their light was gone.  I looked at the mountains, and they were quaking.  All the hills were swaying.  I looked, and there were no people; every bird in the sky had flown away.  I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert.  All its towns lay in ruins before the Lord, before his fierce anger.

We have spoken many times that man is trying to break the seals of God over man and woman; the womb, the seasons, the weather, as well as other seals of God.  The prophet says “I looked” or “Behold” four times.  The prophet sees the reversal and undoing of creation.  In Genesis, God saw with satisfaction his work of creation.  As Yahweh’s destructive power is loosed on his sinful people, there is a direct opposite account of the prophet’s vision of destruction.

“Whereas the darkness of Genes 1:2 gave place to light in 1:3, followed by the sun and moon in 1:14-18, here the lights in the heavens are gone.  In Genesis 1:9-10, the dry land appeared as the waters were gathered together.  Stability and order began to emerge out of the chaos of the deep.  But here, even the mountains and hills are quaking and swaying.  In Genesis 1: 20-31, there was an explosion of life, as swarms of birds and beasts, along with the founders of the human race, are brought into being and told to be fruitful and multiply, but here humankind is nowhere to be found and every bird has fled.  In Genesis 1: 11-13, the earth began to produce an abundance of life-bearing plants and trees, but here even the most fruitful land has become a desert, and all its cities have been destroyed.” (David E. Garland)

4:27-30: Thus, has the LORD said, the whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not have a full end.  For this shall the earth mourn, and the heavens above be black; because I have spoken it; I have purposed it, and will not repent, neither will I turn back from it.  The whole city shall flee for the noise of the horsemen and bowmen; they shall go into thickets, and climb upon the rocks; every city shall be forsaken, and not a man dwell therein.  When you are spoiled, what will you do?  Though you clothe yourself with crimson, though you deck yourself with ornaments of gold, though you paint your face.  In vain you shall make yourself fair.  Your lovers will despise you.  They will seek your life.

For the first time, we hear the good news, this destruction will not be complete destruction.  I will not have a full end.”  The people are under so much fear, at the sound of the enemy’s advance, they flee for their lives.  This is an undeniable example of being under God’s curse.

Deut. 28:25: The LORD shall cause you to be smitten before your enemies: You shall go out one way against them, and flee seven ways before them: and shall be removed into all the kingdoms of the earth.

We studied this scripture Sunday night as we watched this scripture unfold in the United States of 9/11/01.

In 2021, we are watching out nation’s government leaders plunge our nation into deeper sin.  A prophecy came forth on 1/3/21, that we are in a “set time,” a time that has been set by God.  America let us repent.

In America, there was once a time when politicians and citizens tried to “cover up” their evil maneuvers.  No longer, everything is out in the open and evil is being forcefully forced upon the citizens of our nation.

Until there is heard a desperate cry,

I hear a cry as of a woman in labor, a groan as of one bearing her first child---the cry of the Daughter of Zion gasping for breath, stretching out her hands and saying, Woe is me now, for my soul is weary because of murderers (vs. 31).

4:2:  The Lord lives in truth, in judgment, and in righteousness, and the nations shall bless themselves in him and in him shall they glory

Blessed Be the Name of the Lord.
