THE KING AND THE KINGDOM

King Jesus has been given the throne, the legal jurisdiction to rule the land (the earth).

 

Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him, for He spoke and it was done He commanded, and it stood fast.  The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect.  The counsel of the LORD stands forever, the “plans” of His heart to all generations.  Blessed is the nation

 

Jesus Christ is the royal seed according to the Davidic Covenant of Second Samuel 7 and First Chronicles 17:14

 

2 Sa. 7: 12-13: When you days are fulfilled, and you shall sleep with your fathers, I will set up your seed after you, which shall proceed out of your bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.  He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.

 

1 Ch. 17:14:  I will settle him in mine house and in my kingdom forever; and his throne shall be established for evermore.

 

1. House = a posterity, family of God.  (Mt. 1:1, 16).
2. Throne = a royal position and authority. (Rev. 3:21)
3. Kingdom = a sphere of rule (Rom. 14:17)
4. Forever = without cessation (Is. 9: 6-7; Lk. 1: 31-33).

 

Jehovah is a covenant-making and covenant-keeping God.  A divine covenant is a sovereign disposition of God whereby He establishes an unconditional or declarative compact with man, obligating Himself, in grace, by the unshackled formula, “I will.”

 

The Davidic Covenant is the seventh and last covenant of the Old Testament.  Jesus Christ is the one who established the New Covenant.  He is the head of the church, which is the true spiritual Israel of God, the Davidic Covenant establishes Jesus Christ as the ultimate ruler of the earth and the universe, the King of kings and Lord of lords.

 

The Abrahamic covenant gave Jesus the land, the earth.  The David Covenant gave Him the throne, the right to rule the earth!  The throne of the Davidic Covenant is the legal authority to rule in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. 

 

God confirmed the New Covenant with an oath or seal.

 

  There is a “king” in every Spirit-filled Christian.  A king is one who rules in the Name of the Lord.  Where the word of a king is, there is power.  There is a kingly anointing, an ability within us to rise up and take authority over our circumstances in the Name of Jesus.

 

The Christ within is a prophet, priest, and king.

 

Luke 17: 20-21: “And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, the kingdom of God comes not with observation; Neither shall they say, Lo here! Or lo there! For behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”

 

1. The prophet speaks, producing righteousness – out of the belly (John 7:38)
2. The priest speaks, producing peace---Out of the sanctuary (Ez. 47: 1-12).
3. The King speaks, producing joy---out of the throne (Rev. 22: 1-2)

 

David was not only an individual, but also an institution.  He was not only a sovereign, but also a symbol.  His place in the historical unfolding of the redemptive purposes of God can hardly be exaggerated.  David fell lower than some men, but he also rose higher.  His lapses should be to us a perpetual warning, and his virtues a perpetual inspiration.

 

David is, in a real sense, the embodiment of all Israel’s ideals; he compassed the gamut of all her varied life and institutions.  He is a personification of the nation itself: shepherd, soldier, king priest, prophet, musician, poet, diplomat, administrator, hero and saint; “a man after God’s own heart;” albeit a sinner, sadly sinning, but greatly repenting.  In David, Israel reached the zenith of the Kingdom ideal and so he is a type of the Messiah, great David’s Greater Son.

 

Jesus Christ is the “Shepherd-King”; our “Great Shepherd” and “Chief Shepherd”.  Jesus is the royal seed who was appointed “heir of all things”. According to the Davidic Covenant of 1 Chron. 17:4-14: “…I will raise up a seed after you, which shall be of your sons; and I will establish his kingdom.  He shall build Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever.  I will be his father, and he shall be My Son; and I will not take My mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before you: but I will settle him in My house and in My kingdom forever; and his throne shall be established forevermore.” 

 

Jesus is King of kings and Lord of lords, root and the off-spring of David, and the bright and morning star.  The lion of the tribe of Judah has prevailed over all enemies.  The Messiah has been given all executive authority in Heaven and in hearts.  He has inherited the throne of David, and of His Kingdom there shall be no end.  King Jesus has been anointed with the oil of gladness above his fellows.  He fulfilled the type of David’s three-fold anointing as exalted son, as king over Judah and as head over all things.  Of the increase of His government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon His kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice.

 

Psalm 102:19:  The Lord has established (sealed) His throne in heaven and his kingdom rules over all.

 

The seal on the throne of David was a covenant of greater implication than the covenant with Abraham.  When Jesus confronted the Pharisees, who defensively declared they were sons of Abraham, Jesus answered them from the throne of David. 

 

Sealed into God’s judgment is everything it takes to govern the universe and the kingdoms of men who occupy it. (Ps. 119:89-91).

 

Ps. 149: 5-9:  Let the saints be joyful in glory; let them sing aloud on their beds.  Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a two-edged sword in their hand, to execute vengeance on the nations, and punishments on the peoples; to bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; to execute on them the written judgment.  This honor have all the saints Praise the Lord.

 

Our Captain is uttering His mighty voice before His army (Joel 2: 1-11).  He has not called us to evacuate the conflict or to escape our place in His redemptive plan.  Yes, we must activate His dominion in the earth. 

 

Jesus told the mother of the sons of Zebedee, “to sit on My right and on My left, this is not Mine to give, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by My Father…You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them.  It is not so among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”  

 

When the Prophet Nathan prophesied to David the great Davidic Covenant, we see David’s great humility to receive this awesome honor, blessing and covenant.

 

2 Samuel 7: 18-29:  “Then David the king went in and sat before the Lord, and he said, Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me this far?  And yet this was insignificant in your eyes. O Lord God, for you have spoken also of the house of your servant concerning the distant future, and this is the custom of man O Lord God.  Again what more can David say to you, for you know your servant, O Lord God…”

 

King David was chosen, appointed, accompanied, preserved, promoted, and honored by God.  He was taken from the sheepcote to become ruler of Israel, their commander, chief, captain, governor and prince (1 Sam. 25:30; 2 Sam. 6:21; 1 Kings 1:36; Mt. 2:6). 

 

2 Sam. 7:10 KJV I will appoint a place for My people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more as before.

 

This important verse reveals five major features of the Davidic covenant, consummated in the new Testament:  I will appoint a place for My people…; This is the throne of God, the sphere of dominion and authority that centers in the name of Jesus Christ (Ex. 33:21; Jn. 14: 1-3; 17: 20-24; Heb. 1:3; Rev. 3:21).

 

…and will plant them… This word means “to set or establish; drive a nail” (Ps. 1; Jn. 15: 1-5).  We are rooted in Him and seated in the heavenlies with Him (Eph. 2:6).  Buried with Him in baptism, we have died, and our lives are hid with Christ in God (Rom. 6: 5-6; Col. 2:11-12; 3: 1-3).

 

…that they may dwell in a place of their own...  We are members in particular of His Body.  Each of us, as a joint of supply shares the authority of His throne, His name.  (Eph. 4:16).

 

…and move no more…; The old realm of double-mindedness is swallowed up in the singleness and simplicity found in Christ ( Mt. 6:22-24; 2 Cor. 11: 2-3; Jas. 1:6-8; Heb. 12: 1-2).  The overcoming Christian who walks in the authority of the Davidic covenant is a pillar in the temple of God, steadfast, immovable (Rev. 3:12).

 

…neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more. As before… Sin, sickness, poverty, and death must bow to the name of King Jesus (Is. 26: 13-14; Gal. 3: 13-14).   The parallel passage in First Chronicles 17:9 says that the enemy will not “waste” or “wear out” the people of God any more.

 

David wanted to build God a house of devotion, but Jehovah declared that He would build David a house (Ps. 127:1; Mt. 16:18).  First Chronicles 17:10 promises that God would subdue or humble all enemies (Ps. 110:1).  2 Sam 7:12 is a principal prophecy concerning David’s Seed, the Messiah.

 

He shall build a house for My Name… This is a dualistic prophecy referring not just to Solomon, but to Jesus.  That name is El Elyon, the Most High God, Possessor of Heaven and earth.  The New Testament Church is that house.

 

…and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever (2 Sam 27:13).  This is the throne of the Son, the Lamb.

 

I will be his Father, and He shall be My Son (2 Sam. 7:14).  This points to the Son-ship of Jesus and His brethren.

 

If he commits iniquity… (1 Sam. 7:14):  This refers to Solomon, not Jesus; Jesus bore our iniquity (1 Kings 11: 9=40; Is. 53; Heb. 7:26).

 

…I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the stripes of the children of men (2 Sam. 7:14):  Every son, including the firstborn, is to be trained and disciplined (Heb. 12: 5-11).  The Messiah literally bore the stripes of men as part of His suffering (Is. 53:5; 1 Pet. 2: 24-25).

 

But My mercy shall not depart away from him… (2 Sam. 7:15):  Jesus Christ is our propitiation or mercy seat (Rom. 3:25).  In Him, the throne of judgment has become the throne of grace (Heb. 4: 14-16).

 

There were several qualities in this sweet Psalmist of Israel, the man after God’s own heart, which prompted the Lord to bring these covenantal results.  A brief study of David’s life reveals the principles of:

 

1. Decision (2 Sam. 2:1).
2. Government (2 Sam. 5:3).
3. Worship (2 Sam. 6:14).
4. Right motives (2 Sam. 6:21).
5. Humility (2 Sam. 7:18).
6. Desperation (2 Sam. 12:16).
7. Prophetic song (2 Sam. 22:1).
8. Son-ship (2 Sam. 24:17).

 

The spiritual tribes of Judah, those who praise the Lord, have acknowledged the heavenly David (2 Sam. 2:4).  Soon the entire holy nation will crown Him king (2 Sam. 5:3; 1 Pet. 2:9)!

 

Mt. 28: 18-20 NIV:  “Then Jesus came to them and said, ‘all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.  Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.  And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.’”

 

The Great Commission is based upon the Davidic covenant!  His jurisdiction is over all!  Jesus’ name has been exalted far above all things.  There is no place in the universe that escapes the sphere of His rule (Ps. 139).

 

Why do we wait?  Why do we hesitate?  There is a time and season for all things (Eccl. 3: 1-8), but the Day of the Lord has dawned.  For six days man has labored in the sweat of his own wisdom and strength (Ex. 20:9; Is. 55:1-3; Mt. 11:28-30; 2 Pet. 3:8).  The seventh day (Sabbath) from Adam and the third day from Jesus has arrived (Hos. 6: 1-3).  It is time for King Jesus to manifest Himself in and through His sons.

 

Why do we procrastinate?  Is it our improper response to the dealings of the Father as the Sauls of this age hound us day and night on the way to the throne?  Every son must be disciplined and trained (Heb. 12: 5-11).  There is Adullam’s dark cave, Michael’s railings and Shimei’s cursings for each of us.  The pressure of Samuel’s oil is often weightier than the crown that shall fit over it.  Could this be a result of self-pity, bitterness, or anger?  But the Spirit of the Son of David lives within to encourage us (1 Sam. 30:6).

 

Then why do we delay?  Is it because we have no control over the matters before us?  Life was simple when we sang the song of the Lord to a few sheep.  Now a nation beckons for a man to rule in righteousness. 

 

Our fear only betrays our selfishness and pride.  A dead man has no apprehensions, no reputation to keep propped up with lame excuses.  He has become a fool for Christ, a prisoner of the Lord, a slave to the will of God.

 

1 Thess. 5:24, NIV “The one who calls you is faithful and He will do it.”

 

2 Tim. 2:13 KJV “If we believe not, yet He abides faithful; He cannot deny Himself.”

 

Jesus Christ is the surety and Guarantee of the new Covenant, the true and faithful witness (Rev. 1:5):

 

The Old Testament word for “covenant” is beriyth, and means “to cut”.  The Lord Jesus was cut on Calvary to provide the New Covenant.  The Greek word for “covenant” is diatheke.  It has to do with the imposition of the will of a superior being upon that of an inferior; that is, of God upon man.   Man can accept or reject the divine contract, but he cannot alter the terms.

 

The great covenants in effect prior to David’s day were…”

 

1. The Edenic covenant (Gen. 1).
2. The Adamic covenant (Gen. 3)
3. The Noahic covenant (Gen. 8-9).
4. The Abrahamic covenant (Gen. 12, 15, 17, 22).
5. The Mosaic covenant (Ex. 19-24; Deut. 4-5).
6. The Palestinian covenant (Deut. 29-30).

 

The Davidic covenant is the seventh and last covenant of the Old Testament, made to Israel’s witness, leader, and commander (Is. 55:4).  The ultimate fulfillment of the Davidic Covenant is found in Jesus Christ, David’s greatest Son, and then the brethren who are conformed to His image (Rom 8: 14-29; Heb. 2: 6-13). 

 

Jesus Christ is the one who established the New Covenant, (New Testament). 

 

Jesus Christ is also the key of David.

 

 Is. 22:22: The key of the house of David I will lay on his shoulder; so he shall open, and no one shall shut; and he shall shut, and no one shall open. (Rev. 3:7)  The Anointed one, the Messiah, is the Horn of David (Ps. 18:2; 89: 20,24; 92:10; 132:17; Lk. 1:69) who has been anointed with the Spirit without measure (Jn. 3:34)---the Seven Spirits of God (the fullness of the Spirit) mentioned in Rev. 1:4; 3:2; 4:5; 5:6.

 

God cannot deny Himself.  He remains faithful to His covenantal word.  There are no excuses.  Abraham gave us the promise.  David gave us the right to appropriate and administer the promise.  Jesus is the SEED of the promise.
