THE CANAANITE CURSE AND NIMROD

TONGUES CONFOUNDED IN JUDGMENT, GIVEN IN GRACE, UNITED IN GLORY

THE CANAANITE CURSE AND NIMROD

(Genesis 9-11)

Genesis 9:19:  “These are the three sons of Noah:  and of them was the whole earth overspread.”

This should completely resolve the question of the whole earth’s population

(I)                Shem – A prophetic declaration is made to Shem that he will have a peculiar relation to Jehovah.  Jesus Christ after the flesh descended from Shem.

(vs.26) “Blessed Be the Lord God of Shem”.  The five sons of Shem went toward Arabia (Gen. 10:21-32):

(a)    Elam – Persians

(b)    Asshur – Assyrians

(c)     Arphaxad – Settled in Chaldea – Jews

(d)    Lud – Lydian’s

(e)    Aram – Syrians

(II)             Canaan, son of Ham, was to be the servant of Shem. (9:26)  The four sons of Ham went toward Africa (Gen. 10:6-20):

a.      Cush – Ethiopia

b.      Mizraim – Egypt

c.       Phut – Africans, Moors, Mauritanians

d.      Canaan – Canaanites (11) sons, Amorites, Gigashites, Hivites, etc.  These were the “thorns” in Israel’s side.  God told Israel to exterminate them.

Genesis 9:25: “And he (Noah) said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.”

CANAANITE CURSE

There were thirteen sins of the Canaanites:

(1)   Homosexuality (Gen. 12:13; 19; 2-38; Lev. 23:22-30; 20:13)

(2)   Incest (lev. 18:6-30; 20: 10-23)

(3)   Inordinate affection (Lev. 18: 19-20; 20:18-23)

(4)   Adultery (Lev. 18: 20-30; 20: 10-23)

(5)   Idolatry (Lev. 18: 21-30; 20: 2-5)

(6)   Profanity (Lev. 18: 21-30)

(7)   Bestiality (lev. 18:23-30; 20:15-23)

(8)   Witchcraft (Lev. 20:6, 23; Dr. 18.

(9)   Whoredom (Lev. 20: 1-23) 9-14

(10)                       Dishonor to parents (lev. 20: 9-23)

(11)                       Murder (dt. 12:31; 18: 9-14)

(12)                       Stealing (Lev. 19:11-23 with 20:23)

(13)                       Lying (Lev. 19: 11-16 with 20:23)

At the Cross of Jesus, every cruse of the Old Testament was broken.  It takes three things to break a curse:

  1. Holy Spirit
  2. Faith
  3. Blood of Jesus

This is not automatic, but must be appropriated through praying in the Holy Ghost by Faith and the Blood.

“ALL NATIONS”

III Japheth:  From Japheth will descent the enlarged races.  Government, science and art, speaking broadly, are and have been Japhetic.

  1. Gomer – Romans, Gauls Galatians, Germans, Celts, Britons.
  2. Magon – Scythians, Chinese, Japanese, Alaskans, Tartars, Red Indians, Russians.
  3. Madai – Medes
  4. Javan – Grecians and Syrians
  5. Tubal – people of the region south of the Black Sea.  A branch of this people settled in Spain.
  6. Meshech – Cappadocians and possibly Russians.
  7. Tiras – Thracians.

Let us mention briefly Noah’s fall in 9:21:  “And he (Noah) drank of the wine and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.  There are similarities here with Adam’s fall.

(1)   Both were lord of creation.

(2)   Both were blessed and told to be fruitful and to multiply.

(3)   Bost were husbandmen.

(4)   Both transgressed in a garden (vineyard)

(5)   Both experienced the exposure of nakedness.

(6)   Both men’s sin brought a terrible curse upon their posterity.

(7)   Both had three sons, one of whom would produce the Messiah.

(8)   Both experienced wonderful prophecy following their fall.

Noah’s prophecy was to his sons in verses 25-27.

Chapter Ten is the “generations of the sons of Noah”.  There are four points of interest for this study.

(1)   Eber (Gen. 10:21; 11:14) is the root word for Hebrew.

(2)      Peleg: (Gen. 10:25) – for in his days was the earth divided.

(3)      Shem (Gen. 10:32) “These are the families of the sons of Noah, after the generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.”

Shem’s generations are named in Genesis 11: 10-26), the line is carried straight from Shem to Abraham, covering 10 generations.

Noah lived to the 9th generation of his descendants.  He died two years before the birth of Abraham.  This was 350 years after the Flood.

NIMROD

(4) – Nimrod – (Gen. 10: 8-9) “And Cush begat Nimrod:  he began to be a mighty one in the earth.  He was a mighty hunter before the Lord:  wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.”

The Hebrew word for Nimrod is “ Nimrowd” and means “ rebel, we will rebel, valiant strong, he that rules, self-ruling will, arbitrary sway; fallen from allegiance, insubordination, rebellion, revolution, anarchy, misrule, impiety.”

He is a type of the Man of Sin and the Son of Perdition (11 Thess. 2: 1-7)

(1)    His name speaks of the Lawless one. (11 Thess. 2:8)

(2)    He headed the great confederacy of Genesis 11 in open revolt against the Lord in brazen defiance of his Maker. (Dan. 11: 36-37)

(3)    He was a hunter.  Like Esau, he was a man of the flesh and the carnal mind. (Gen. 25:27)  He preyed upon others to join him as he rebelled against God’s order and program.

(4)    Four times the word “mighty” is used to describe him (11 Thess. 2:9)  “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders and with all deceivableness and unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.  And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:  that they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. “

(5)    He was a king, and the beginning of his kingdom was Babel. (Genesis 10:10)  “And the beginning of his (Nimrod) kingdom was Babel” Chapter 11: 1-9 describes the wickedness of Nimrod’s city, Babel.

(6)    Nimrod’s supreme ambition and desire was to make himself a name. (11 Thess. 2:4)  (Gen. 11:4) “Let us make us a name”.

Nimrod was the grandson of Ham and sprang from the loins of him who had received a curse.  He began to be mighty, which intimates that he fought and struggled for preeminence, and obtained it by force.  He became a leader, a ruler over men.

He was said to be Mighty.  This is the Hebrew word “Gibb or” It is rendered as Chief or Chieftain.  The Chaldee paraphrase of 1 Chron. 1:10 says that “Cush begat Nimrod who began to prevail in wickedness, for he slew innocent blood and rebelled against Jehovah.”

The beginning of his kingdom was Babel (“gate of God” and then later, “confusion”).  Out of that land he went forth into Assyria and built Nineveh, and other cities (Gen. 10:11-12) we can thus see that Nimrod’s ambition was to establish a world-empire.

Nimrod was the leader of the revolt.  Babel means “gate of God” and is the principle of religious confusion.

(1)    The people were of one language and speech; thus, one heart, (Mt. 12:34).  They tapped the principle of unity. (11:6) and God knew that “nothing will be impossible” to them (King James – “nothing will be restrained from them”.

(2)    The tower was made of dirt (brick) and slime.  Note the word “us” is used four times in verses 3-4.  The rebellion was universal.  This again is the way of Cain (man’s way in defiance of God’s way).

(3)    The word city speaks of the church and the word Tower denotes ministry. (Mt. 5:14; Isa. 5: 1-2).  Let us make us a name and reputation for our system, denomination, doctrine, ministry, etc.  This is opposite to the Mind of Christ.

(Phil. 2: 1-11)”If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, fulfill ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind.  Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than themselves.  Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.  Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:  Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God; But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

(4)    Their motive was anti-God.  They did not want to be scattered upon the face of the earth.  This was in defiance of God’s command in Gen. 9:1.  The Spirit of Christ ever desires to disperse the blessings while the spirit of anti-christ ever desires to hoard the blessings.

(5)    The Lord had to come down to even see this thing they built.  So it is with those who are seated with him in the heavenlies (Eph. 2:6)

(6)    The Tower of Babel was product of the vain imagination of men.  It was not the product of the Spirit of God. (Rom 8:14; 11 Cor. 10: 3-5)

(7)    God scattered them which resulted in the conversion as described in Acts 8:1 of Ham – The Ethiopian (Acts 8); Shem – Saul (Acts 9); Japheth – Cornelius (Acts 10).

Here tongues scattered the nations.  In Acts 2, God brings together the Body with Tongues (1 Cor. 12:13)

Tongues were:

(1)   Confounded in judgment (Gen. 11:7) ““”Let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.”

(2)   Given in grace (Acts 2:4) “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven…and how hear we every man in out own tongue, wherein we were born?  Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia and in Judea and Cappadocia in Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia in Egypt and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Crete’s and Arabians, we do hear them speaking our tongues the wonderful works of God.” (Note these were the same nations that came from the generations of Noah’s sons.

(3)   United in Glory: (Rev. 7:9) “And after this I beheld, and lo a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and pals in their hands; and cried with a loud voice saying, SALVATION TO OUR GOD WHICH SITS UPON THE THRONE, AND UNTO THE LAMB.

Note the emphasis is on ALL NATIONS BEING UNITED IN GLORY.
