REVELATION - CHAPTER 21: 1-12 - A NEW HEAVEN AND NEW EARTH"
A NEW HEAVEN AND NEW EARTH
Revelation 21:1

Pastor Carolyn Sissom
I have unwittingly written a book on Revelation, Chapter 21.
The following are messages on chapter 21:
- New Jerusalem –July 28, 1992 vision of New Jerusalem.
- No More Night ---May 1994 – Given to me by: Word of Knowledge
- The Twelve Stones in the foundations of the wall of New Jerusalem – Sermon titled: The Blessings of the House of Jacob – January 4, 1992—revisited Nov. 27, 2007.
- The Twelve Gates of Pearl – December 2, 2007
- No More Curse – October 2, 2011
In order to fulfill the teaching of the Book of Revelation, I will continue on a verse by verse exegesis. However, as the Holy Spirit leads, I will incorporate the above messages. We may be on Chapter 21 and 22 for the whole month of January.
Rev. 21:1: “And I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.”
Isa. 65:17: “For behold I create a new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.”
This is Jehovah’s answer to the intercession of Isaiah 63: 7-65:12. (See sermon on Beulah Land). John sees the fulfillment and transcendence of the promise of Isa. 65:17 and 66:22. In order to comprehend totally the Lord’s mandate of a New Heaven and a New earth (Rev. 21:1). It is important that we study and understand how powerful this prayer of the righteous remnant is pertaining to the Kingdom of God. Of course, it was the Holy Spirit who gave the remnant the burden and utterance of the prayer to pray the Heart, Will and Eternal Purposes of God.
With the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, the way has been cleared for the emergence of this new creation, ‘THE HOME OF RIGHTEOUSNESS”.
“But within keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.”
Isaiah 66 can also be included in God’s answer to the exiles. The Lord rebukes them for having ignored Him by continuing in practices offensive to Him. God can give to others the opportunities which we reject (65: 1-7). However, God promises to preserve a remnant of those that seek Him. But He will not spare those who refused to heed Him and who made their choices without regard to the pleasure of God.
God’s final answer is the dissolution of the present earth and the creation of a new one. The conditions of the Kingdom are characterized by joyfulness, peace, and righteousness with longevity free from violence.
Here we see the Lord’s Mercy reserved for the righteous remnant:
65: 1-7: We see the sins of an apostate Church.
65: 8-10: The election and the blessing of the Righteous Remnant.
65: 11-12: The judgment of the apostate church.
65: 13-16: The blessings of the Remnant versus curses of an apostate Church.
65: 17-25: Blessings and glories in store for God’s own.
2 Peter 3: 10-14: “The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also, and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in all Holy conversation and Godliness, looking for and hasting to the coming of the day of the God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to His promise look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwells righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that you look for such things, be diligent that you may be found of Him in peace, without spot and blameless.”
Many will be prophesying of the significance of the year 2013. We know that metaphorically thirteen (13) is the number for rebellion. The rebellious people are described as those who, in spite of all Jehovah’s patience, still persist in idolatrous and evil practices. Against these Jehovah is compelled to proceed with judgment. Then follows a description of the remnant, the Holy seed, those who are described as the servants of Jehovah.
These are not to be destroyed by the wicked, but are to be led out of the places of difficulty into their inheritance and prosperity. The sifting process is next described. The life of the servants of God and the life of the rebellious are placed in a striking contrast. The result of the sifting of judgment is the establishment of the New Order, that establishment which Jesus came preaching, the Kingdom of God.
All evil has been abolished and the first heaven and the first earth have passed away.
God the King has found Himself a resting-place and dwelling-place in the hearts of His people.
Two Orders are contrasted here. The Old Order is addressed in Isa. 65: 1-7 and 11-12. The New Order is addressed in verses 8-10 and 17-25.
1. The New Order people has another name (Isa. 65:15), which is a new name:
Rev. 2:17b: “to him that overcomes will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knows except he that receives it.”
Rev. 3:12: “Him that overcomes will I make a pillar in the temple of My God and he shall go no more out; and I will write upon him the name of My God, and the name of the city of My God, which is New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My God; and will write upon him My new name.”
- This New Name is a New nature, even His nature:
Col. 1:27: “To whom God would make know what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you the hope of glory.”
Luke 17: 20-21: “When He was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, He answered them and said, the Kingdom of God comes not with observation; neither shall they say, Lo here! Or lo there! For, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”
- This New Nature is a New Heat (Ezek 36).
- This new nature (heart) is the heart of a Servant (Isa. 42: 1-4).
In Isaiah 65, the word “servants” is mentioned seven (7) times! This reveals a church that is a perfect or a complete servant; this servant church shall be exalted.
65:8 New Wine—joyful, refreshing, medicinal.
65:8 Cluster—rightly related without prejudice or isolationism.
65:9 Inheritor---possessing the promises.
65:9 Elect ---predestined.
65:11 Troop---in rank and order; happy (Gad)
65:15 Chosen---preferred, chosen out, hand-picked
65:18 Jerusalem---a habitation of peace.
65:19 People---The apple of His eye (precious).
65:22 Tree---the extension and prolongation of that that He is.
65:23 Blessed---prosperous and healthy.
65:25 Holy Mountain---marked out by dominion with holiness.
This New order of people is a Royal Generation secured. These are the seed whom the Lord has blessed. They are also designated as:
- The garments of salvation.
- The robe of righteousness.
- Ornaments.
- Jewels.
- The Bud.
- The Seed springing forth
- Righteousness and Praise.
Isa. 66:22: “For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain before Me, says the Lord, so shall your seed and your name remain. It shall come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one Sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before Me, says the Lord.
The entire physical creation is redeemed and the curse removed. All of creation has been waiting for this moment to be delivered. Earth is physical. The heavens are physical. John is describing the creation as it was before, but with the curse removed. This is a redeemed Heaven and Earth.
Jesus Christ redeemed us from the “curse of the Law”. He became a curse for us. Once we receive Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior, through our Faith, His Blood and the Holy Spirit, we have been given authority over the curses of the earth.
Rev. 22:3: “And there shall be no more curse; but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve Him. And they shall see His face; and His name shall be in their foreheads; and there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God gives them light; and they shall reign for ever and ever. “
In the Presence of the Lord, there is no more curse, only blessings for those saints who will abide in Jesus.
Before the advent of the divine Judge (20:11), there was no longer any sea; The sea was to the Jews a symbol of separation (not, as to the Greeks, a means of communication); moreover throughout the Holy Bible it symbolizes restless insubordination.
(Scripture from K.J.V.) I entered into the labors of Principles of Present Truth on Isaiah, by: Kelly Varner; and The F.F. Bruce New International Bible Commentary. Comments and conclusions are my own and no9t meant to reflect the views of those whom I entered into their labors.
NEW JERUSALEM
Revelation 21: 2-12
Revelation 21:2-4: “And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away.”
July 28, 1992
The Lord spoke to me to teach metaphorical language. This is one of the languages of God which is used throughout the Bible especially in prophesy. “A metaphor is a figure of speech in which one thing is spoken of as if it were another.”(1) The Bible is full of parables, types, proto-types, symbols, fables, allegories, metaphors and idioms.
I began praying about where to teach. Should I teach Psalms, the Major Prophets, the Minor Prophets? What?
Well, I soon got my answer. The Lord spoke to me, “Teach from the Book of Revelation.” Later the Lord gave me a vision of the night and showed me New Jerusalem.
Vision of NEW JERUSALEM: “I was on a high place and saw the city at a far distance. The buildings of the City were white as pearl and the streets of the city were pure liquid gold. It seems to be flowing like a river. I saw that it was a walled city, but that was the only detail I was shown except the roof line of the city was sculptured domes.
The Lord spoke to me in the vision. He said, “CAROLYN TEACH NEW JERUSALEM AS PURITY.”
“Son of man, describe the temple to the people of Israel, that they may be ashamed of their sins, Let them consider the plan, and if they are shamed of all they have done, make known to them the design of the temple—its arrangement, its exits and entrances—its whole design and all its regulations and laws. Write these down before them so that they may be faithful to its design and follow its regulations:
This is the law of the temple: All the surrounding area on top of the mountain will be most holy. Such is the law of the temple.” (Ezekiel 43: 10-12)
The vision of Ezekiel’s temple begins in chapter 40. These chapters deal with the Temple and God’s Glorious House. This section emphasizes the permanence of the Glory of the Lord; His book begins with a vision of God’s Glory in (chapter 1) and concludes with the same. We see a New Temple (40: 1-43:12) and a New Worship (43:13-46:24) and a New Apportionment (47:1-48:35)
“The dimensions in Ezekiel’s temple are much greater than Mount Moriah! It is larger than Jerusalem or Canaan.
There is a stream from the temple all the way to the Dead Sea.’
This teaching is a follow-up of a previous teaching of the Brazen Altar. In that teaching we covered the eight (8) temples of God. To understand the temple of New Jerusalem, I will briefly re-cap the temples of the Bible.
“God created man for one reason: God longs to have fellowship with man. God chose us.”
God’s first dwelling place with man was in the garden. “And they heard the voice of the Lord walking in the garden in the cool of the day.” The God who made man and placed him the Garden was the God who came down to that man, walked with him and talked to him. Then sin separated man from God. But we know that God walked with Enoch, talked to Abraham and spoke to Moses face to face.
Then God spoke to Moses saying, “Let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them.” (Exodus 24:8) There is no suggestion that Moses proposed to God. It was God’s idea, - His desire. This temple was a portable, temporary dwelling place. The Lord said “There I will meet with you and I will commune with you.”
The Tabernacle of David comes between the Tabernacle of Moses and the Temple of Solomon. It remained approximately 40 years. It was given by revelation to David and was a single tent with a single piece of furniture; the Ark of the Covenant.
Then God gave his consent at the request of David to build a permanent temple. But, not to David because he was “a man of war; but to his son, Solomon. With great magnificence and with tremendous costliness he built the temple. “Then on the great day of dedication the glory of the Lord filled the house of God” (1 Kings 8:11). Then man’s sin of idolatry angered God and God allowed the destroyer, manifested in Nebuchadnezzar to destroy the temple.
After seventy years, there was a return of the people to Jerusalem under the leadership and anointings of Ezra and Nehemiah. Zerubbabel’s temple was then built. This temple was modest compared to Solomon’s. But the people gave the best they had for the construction materials. God accepted it and dwelt in it. “And the children of Israel kept the dedication of this House of God with joy.”
The next temple to be built was Herod’s temple. There is no indication that this temple was built in the will of God. Herod tore down Zerubbabel’s temple and constructed the new temple for the perpetuation of his name.
God again provided His own temple. Men could not keep the law and God’s covenants, so God had already made provision from the foundations of the earth for a “new and better way” to fellowship with man.
“God was in Christ reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them… (2Cor.5:19). “Jesus said, ‘destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.”
Each temple was short lived. The temple of Christ’s body was destroyed when they nailed it to a tree. When Jesus rose from the dead and ascended into Heaven and the Holy Spirit of God descended upon the disciples, another temple came into being.
“Know you not that you are the temple of God and the Spirit of God dwells in you.” (1 Cor. 3:16). “For you are the temple of the living God; as God said, I will dwell in them and walk in them; and I will be their God and they shall be my people.”
God has again come very near to man. Because this temple (our earthly bodies) are not eternal, God made a way through grace that the dominion of death was destroyed by the death conqueror for those who have been brought from death to life.
The eighth temple described in the Word of God is a spiritual temple.
“For we know if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” (2 Cor. 5:1)
Ezekiel saw this spiritual temple in visions of God beginning with Chapter 40. He saw metaphorically the fullness of the gospel temple erected by Christ and his apostles. Under the types and figures of a city, temple, altar, priests and sacrifices is foreshown the spiritual worship that would be performed in gospel times and perfected at last in the Kingdom of Glory. I do not believe the holy remnant in any generation has to wait for the 1000-year reign of Christ to enter into this glorious spiritual temple. “For we are the temple of the living God.” “Christ went through the greater and more perfect tabernacle that is not man made. That is to say not a part of this creation.” (Heb. 9:11)
I believe for those whom God has saved and called to a holy life, for his own purposes and by his grace, He will raise up a Church Triumphant on this side of heaven that will experience the Glory of the Lord in all of it’s fullness. But, it is not automatic; it must be received by faith and the Blood of Christ Jesus.
“Son of Man, this is the place of my throne and the place of the soles of my feet. This is where I will lie among the Israelites (true or spiritual) forever. The house of Israel will never again defile my holy name – neither they nor their kings – by their prostitution and the lifeless idols of their kings in high places…I will live among them forever.” (Ezekiel 43: 7-9)
Any view of restoring animal sacrifice in Israel is a direct insult to the words of Jesus in John 4: 19-14 and the clear teaching of Hebrews that HIS SACRIFICE WAS ONCE FOR ALL, AND NEVER TO BE REPEATED.
“The woman said unto him, Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and you say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship. Jesus said unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour comes when you shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem worship the Father. You worship you know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. The hour comes, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeks such to worship him. God is a Spirit and they had worship him must worship him in Spirit and in Truth.”
“God is building a New Temple. You are living stones, put together, fused together without the sound of a hammer, without man-made religious systems trying to organize you, brought together by the Spirit of God into a relationship and a unity which only God can do…this the Temple that Ezekiel saw. This is the temple that has a river running out of it. A river of life, clear as crystal. John on the isle of Patmos saw it, Ezekiel saw it and I saw it. “You also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ...”(Bill Britton)
“To this point, we see the complete exclusion of man from the design of the Temple. Man is incapable of determining the standards of Divine holiness. Its entire design was a caricature of the holiness and the perfection of God.”(K.V.) (43:10-12) ‘CAROLYN TEACH NEW JERUSALEM AS PURITY.”
The Glory of the Lord returned by way of the East. His voice was like the voice of many waters and the earth shined. (Matt. 17: Mk.9) with HIS GLORY. The Lord Jesus (God’s Glory was brought to the temple to the circumcised and dedicated. (Lk.1-2).
Another copy of this heavenly tabernacle is described to us here in Revelation 21 as “The New Jerusalem”. The Lord said, “Carolyn teach out of the Book of Revelation”.
“There was no longer any sea, I saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem (the glorified community of the people of Christ) coming down out of heaven from God: It is thus emphasized that the church is the city…whose architect and builder is God, Not a voluntary association of men and women. “Our mother-city is the heavenly Jerusalem, and she is not a slave to Jewish laws.” (Gal. 4:26…acceptable to God because of our faith”. (Verse 31 L.B.) Hitherto, the glorified saints have been seen in heaven with Christ ‘prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband”. The beloved community is both city and bride. “A loud voice from the throne” Now the voice proclaims the eternal consummation of the blessings of the gospel.
“THE DWELLING OF GOD IS WITH MEN, AND HE WILL LIVE WITH THEM”.
THE COVENANT BLESSINGS IN Jeremiah 31:33:
“I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts and I will be their God and they will be my people.”
So it was when the Word became flesh and pitched his tabernacle among men, so it is in the renewed earth because of the presence of the redeemed community, reflecting the glory of God. (4) Paraphrased F.F. Bruce bible Commentary
“They will be his people and God himself will dwell with them. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes there will be no more death.” Because it has been destroyed in the fire lake. The old order of things has passed away. I am making everything new” If anyone is in Christ, says Paul, “he is a new creation.” James wrote, “He chose to give us birth through the Word of truth, that we might be a kind of first fruits of all he created”.
Isa. 65:16: “He who blesses himself in the earth shall bless himself in the God of truth; and he that swears in the earth shall swear by the God of truth; because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid from my eyes.”
Rev. 21: 7-8:“He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and He will be my Son. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars – their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulpher. This is the second death.” John’s catalogue of those who are excluded from the blessings of the New Creation begins with those who through fear have denied the faith in the face of persecution.
The vision of Holy Jerusalem was delivered by one of the seven angels who was the messenger of the gospel to the apostle. “The angel said come, I will show you the Bride, the wife of the Lamb. And he carried me away in the spirit to a mountain great and high”. This is the spiritual mountain of vision that all prophets will be brought. Ezekiel described it in Ez. 40:2: in visions of God he took me to the land of Israel and set me on a very high mountain, on whose south side were some buildings that looked like a city.” John describes it in Rev. 21. “ And showed me the Holy city Jerusalem coming down out of Heaven from God. It shone with the Glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like jasper, clear as crystal.:
John ransacks the resources of language and metaphor – jewels, gold and pearls – to describe the indescribable glory which the holy city reflects.
“No longer will violence be heard in your land, nor ruin or destruction within your borders, but you will cal your walls salvation and your gates praise.” (Isa. 60:18)
“then the man brought me to the gate facing east, and I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. His voice was like the roar of rushing waters, and the land was radiant with his glory.” (Ez. 43:1)
“It had a great and high wall with twelve gates and twelve angels at the gates.” The wall is our security. The city has a wall that is impregnable as well as precious. The guards to the gates of the city are twelve angels to admit and receive the redeemed. “these gates will always stand open, they will never be shut day or night. (Isaiah 60:11)
“On these gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel.” The beloved city is thus marked out as the true Israel or people of God, thus is emphasized by the re-occurrence of the number twelve and its multiplies. “Twelve is metaphorical of the number of the elect or chosen.”

NEW JERUSALEM
Revelation 21:2-4: “And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain; for the former things are passed away.”

Then sin separated man from
