This chapter contains Jeremiah’s word to the nations of Ammon, Edom, Damascus (Syria), Kedar and Hazor (Arabs), and Elam (Iran).   We will continue the study with the focus on the powers and principalities over these ancient nations.  The above map is not complete, but hopefully helpful.

  1.  Ammon - Northwest Arabia, east of Gilead and the Dead Sea – “tribal; inbred; Ammon, a son of Lot and brother of Moab”; “a people”; “a tribe”; - reveals the principle of Mixture.

Ammon was the northern “brother” nation of Moab.  Milcom was the national god.  This is the same as Molech, Apis the Bull, the Golden Calf, Baal, etc.  Cultures who embrace the same principles as Moab and Egypt await their turn at the wheel of judgment.  Affiliate cultures have associative judgments.  On 10/23/21, Barrack Obama accused the conservative Christians of starting a “Trumped-up Culture war.”  We are in a war against Cancel Culture, but also the culture of Socialism.  Like Jeremiah, the Church is required to stand and judge ungodly cultures with the Word of God which leave God out of their reckoning.

When Israel was journeying from Mt. Seir in the wilderness, the LORD forbade them to touch Ammon.  Deut. 2:19:  When you come near the people of Ammon, do not harass them or meddle with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the people of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the descendants of Lot as a possession.

They were the offspring of Lot’s youngest daughter who bare a son, and called his name Ben-Ammi (Gen. 19:38); and later referred to as Ammon.  The people of Ammon were deeply associated with Moab in causing grief to Israel.

The question is asked,

49:1-2: Against the Ammonites, thus says the LORD: Has Israel no sons? Has he no heir? Why then does their king inherit Gad, and his people dwell in cities? Behold the days come, says the Lord, that I will cause an alarm of war to be heard in Rabbah of the Ammonites; and it shall be burned with fire. then shall Israel take possession of his inheritance, says the LORD.

Rabbah (V.2) is in the exact place as Amon, Jordan, the capital city of t
