JESUS CHRIST IN THE BOOK OF PSALMS 60-68

Pastor Carolyn Sissom

As we come to Psalm 60, there are key verses having to do with Palestine and the present political alliances of the Middle East.  Again, as in Psalms 58 and 59 David prophesies a divine utterance promising Israel victory in the midst of being attacked on all sides by their enemies.  Prophecy stands through generations, and is just as powerful today as the day it was uttered by David.  Surely, the fear of God should come on the United Nations, Hamas, and the Middle Eastern Nations if they read this prophecy.

It is God’s sovereign Word over Edom which includes parts of modern- day, Jordan, Israel, and Egypt.  God’s sovereign Word over Shechem (West Bank), the valley of Succoth (Battle fought with the Philistines), Moab (Jordan), Philistia (Palestine).

The prayer in verses 11-12 is a cry to God for help by David “Give us help from trouble for vain is the help of man.  Through God, we shall do valiantly; for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.

For Israel, vain has been the help of man through the centuries.  If Donald J. Trump’s 20-point peace agreement with Gaza stands, it will be to the Glory of the Hand of God, not the glory of man.

60:5-9: That your beloved may be delivered, save with your right hand, and hear me.  God has spoken in his holiness.  I will rejoice.  I will divide Shechem and met out the valley of Succoth.  Gilead is mine.  Manasseh is mine.  Ephraim also is the strength of my head.  Judah is my lawgiver.  Moab is my washpot.  Over Edom will I cast out my shoe.  Philistia, shout thou because of me.  Who will bring me into the strong city? Who will lead me into Edom?

The casting of the shoe means to take possession of.  Edom is disgraced to the character of the slave to whom the conqueror tosses his sandals.

The neighboring nations are reduced to servitude in strong contrast to the honor assigned to Ephraim and Judah is the disgrace of Moab and Edom.  Moab notorious for its pride (Isa. 16:6) is compared to the vessel which is brought to the victorious warrior to wash his feet when he returns from the battle.  The old enemy of God and His people is degraded to do menial service.  Mighty Philistia must raise the shout of homage to its conqueror. (Ps. 2:11, 18:44, Ps. 47:1).

Psalms 61-68 are a series of eight on the KINGDOM.

PSALM 61 – PRAYER FOR THE KING AND HIS KINGDOM

61:1: Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer.

This is a hymn of confidence and possibly was written during the time of Absalom’s rebellion.  In the midst of trouble, his hope is still in God.

61:2:… when my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I.  For you have been a shelter for me, and strong tower from the enemy.  I will abide in your tabernacle forever.  I will trust in the covert of your wings.  Selah.

Bill Gaither:  “Why don’t you lead me to that Rock that is higher than I

Oh, lead me, yes Lord lead me.

Why don’t you lead me to that Rock that is higher than I

Thou hast been a shelter for me.

Well, if you down in yonder fold and search among the sheep

My brother thou has been a shelter for me

Well, you’ll find Him there so I am told with those He loves to keep.

My brother thou have been a shelter for me.

If you’ll go into the wilderness where dying ones are lost

My brother you have been a shelter for me.

Well, you’ll find Him there to heal and bless no matter what the cost My Brother you have been a shelter for me.”

The Lord spoke to me this past week that many who walked away from God and His way into their own way are coming out of the wilderness back to God.  To some REDEMPTION is written over their heads.  To others, they will choose to stay in the wilderness.  For those who will yield to the Lord, “I will abide in your tabernacle forever.”

61: 6-8 The blessings and Glory of the King.  Thou will prolong the king’s life and his years as many generations.

The heritage of those who fear God:

1.      Prolonged life.

2.     Permanent abiding (ruling) before God.)

3.     Preparation and Preservation by grace and truth.

4.     Praise sung to God forever.

5.     Performance of vows (promises) daily.

PSALM 62 – WAITING IN FAITH FOR THE KING’S DELIVERANCE

All of David’s hope is seen in this Song.  He is waiting and trusting for deliverance.

PSALM 62:1-2: Truly my soul waits upon God; from him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation.  He is my defense.  I shall not be greatly moved.

“Glory hallelujah, I shall not be moved; Anchored in Jehovah, I shall not be, I shall not be moved.  I shall not be, I shall not be moved.  Just like a tree that’s planted by the waters, I shall not be moved.  In His love abiding, I shall not be moved; and in Him confiding, I shall not be, I shall not be moved.”

62:5-8:  My soul, wait thou only upon God, for my expectation is from him.  He only is my rock and my salvation.  He is my defense.  I shall not be moved.  In God is my salvation and my glory; the rock of my strength, and my refuge is in God.  Trust in him at all times, ye people, pour out your heart before him.  God is a refuge for us. Selah.

“Clap your hands, all ye people.  Praise the God on Whom ye call.  Lift your voice and shout His praise.  Triumph in His sovereign grace.  Glorious is the LORD Most High, Terrible in majesty.  He, his sovereign sway maintains, King over all the earth he reigns.”

62:9-12: Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie to be laid in the balance.  They are altogether lighter than vanity.  Trust not in oppression and become not vain in robbery.  If riches increase set not your heart upon them.  God has spoken once, twice have I heard this; that power belongs unto God.  Also, unto thee, O LORD, belongs mercy; for you render to every man according to his work.

PSALM 63 – HUNGERING AND THIRSTING FOR THE KINGDOM

(A Psalm of David when he was in the wilderness of Judah)

63:1-4: O God, you are my God, early will I seek you.  My soul thirsts for you.  My flesh longs for you in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is. To see your power and your glory, so as I have seen you in the sanctuary, because your lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise you.  Thus, will I bless you while I live.  I will lift up my hands in your name.

“Thy loving kindness is better than life.  Thy loving kindness is better than life. My lips shall praise thee, thus will I bless thee.  Thy loving kindness is better than life.  I will lift up my hands unto thy name.  I lift my hand up unto thy name.”

This is the realm of the thirsting heart.  In principle, it speaks of adolescence in the Holy Place and the Feast of Pentecost prior to the third anointing (2 Sam. 5:3) for the Throne and rulership of all things.

This Psalm can hardly be divided because it runs on in a continuous and intense outpouring of Praise.

63: 5-11: My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness, and my mouth shall praise you with joyful lips.  When I remember you upon my bed and meditate on you in the night watches.  Because you have been my help, therefore in the shadow of your wings will I rejoice.  My soul follows hard after you.  Your right hand upholds me.  Those that seek my soul, to destroy it, shall go into the lower parts of the earth (Sheol).  They shall fall by the sword.  They shall be a portion for foxes.  But the king shall rejoice in God; every one that swears by hin shall glory, but the mouth of them that speak lies shall be stopped.

PSALM 64 – THE KING’S JUDGMENT OF THE WICKED

64:1: Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer preserve my life from fear of the enemy.

David is beset by wiley enemies who plan and plot against him with malicious and persistent determination.  This is part of the cost of public ministry.  I heard Lance Wallnau say this week, that he is trolled by Christians and naysayers who are looking for something he says or does wrong to accuse him.  This is something we have to overcome in order to be effective in ministry.  As long as we are walking with JESUS, preaching the Word, staying in our lane, and following our commission, we just blow the trollers and naysayers off.  We don’t fall into the traps of responding to arguments.  We state our convictions and leave the accusers to work out their own salvation.  Their issues-- not mine.  Me and Jesus have settled all issues.

In this Psalm, we see the snoo0i9ng of sinners at the sins of saints.  This is a Psalm of measure for measure.

64:2-10:  Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity.  Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words; that they may shoot in secret at the perfect; suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.  They encourage themselves in an evil matter; they commune of laying snares privily; they say, “Who shall see them?” They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search; both the inward thought of everyone of them and the heart, is deep.  But God shall shoot at them with an arrow, suddenly shall they be wounded.  So, they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves; all that see them shall flee away.  And all men shall fear and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing.  The righteous shall be glad in the LORD and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.

PSALM 65 – KINGDOM RESTORATION IN THE EARTH

65:1: Praise waits for thee, O God, in Sion; and unto thee shall the vow be performed.  O though that hears prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come.

Ps. 65:11: You crown the year with your goodness, and your paths drop fatness.

This is a great song of worship and that of a Harvest Feast (Tabernacles).  It describes the present visitation which has begun on the earth.

Goodness is a mysterious term that communicates God’s gracious attributes, His acts, and His character.  Jesus asserts that “no one is good but God alone”.  And the psalmist writes, “You are my Lord; I have no good apart from you” (Ps. 16:2).

God is the source of all goodness; “He who does good is of God” (3 Jn. 11).

God called His creation into being and declared it good:  He saw everything that he had made, and behold it was very good.  Creation continues to bless the human race.  God’s creation, includes people, who are created in his image, are an extension of his own goodness.  Paul asserts that ‘everything created by God is good” (1 Tim. 4:4).

When Moses asked the Lord to show him His glory, it was God’s goodness that passed before Moses.

Jer.31:12-14: They shall come and sing in the height of Zion and shall flow together to the goodness of the Lord, for wheat, and for wine, and for oil and for the young of the flock and of the herd; and their soul shall be as a watered garden; and they shall not sorrow any more at all.  Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance, both young men and old together; for I will turn their mourning into joy, and will comfort them, and make them rejoice from their sorrow.  I will satiate the soul of the priests with fitness and my people shall be satisfied with my goodness, says the Lord.

65:4-7: Blessed is the man whom you choose, and cause to approach unto you, that he may dwell in your courts; we shall be satisfied with the goodness of your house, even of your holy temple.  By terrible things in righteousness will you answer us, “God of  our salvation, who are the confidence of all the ends of the earth, and of them that are afar off upon the sea.  Which by strength set fast the mountains; being girded with power.  Which stills the noise of the seas, the noise of their waves, and the tumult of the people.

We should decree this over the riots and shootings going on this summer and now through the fall which is war against Christians and the Jews.

65: 9-13:  You visit the earth and water it.  You greatly enrich it with the river of God, which is full of water.  You prepare them corn, when you have so provided for it.  You water the ridges thereof abundantly.  You settle the furrows thereof.  You make it soft with showers.  You bless the springing thereof.  You crown the year with goodness, and your paths drop fatness.  They drop upon the pastures of the wilderness; and the little hills rejoice on every side.  The pastures are clothed with flock.  They valleys also are covered over with corn.  They shout for joy.  They also sing.

“There is a River, deep and broad.  It’s course no mortal knows.  It fills with joy the church of God and widens as it flows.  Clearer than crystal is the stream, and bright with endless day.  The waves with every blessing teem, and life and health convey…”

Psalm 65 is actually a lyrical poem and could be sung as written by David.

It is the song of the Bountiful God.  I used this Psalm as my lead scripture after our Jubilee conference in 2012.  It was also during a time of transition when we moved out of Little White Church as it was being moved from the ranch to its temporary location on the George Bush Park easement.  We had temporarily moved into the mansion at 2323 Baker Road.  What a journey!!!

Only God could have kept this tossed to and fro little church together.  ONLY GOD ALMIGHTY – GIVE HIM GLORY.   I count it all joy!!!

PSALM 66 – WORSHIP AND PRAISE IN THE KINGDOM

66:1-4: Make a joyful noise unto God, all ye lands.  Sing forth the honor of his name.  Make His praise glorious.  Say unto God, “how terrible are you in your works!  Through the greatness of your power shall your enemies submit themselves unto you.  All the earth shall worship you and shall sing unto you.  They shall sing to your name.  Selah.

This could be a Resurrection Psalm and is often used on Easter Sunday.  It is a Psalm of worship and Praise and of National Thanksgiving.

Psalms 65-68 prophesy of Acts 3:20-21: He shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you. Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God has spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

This is one of the most beautiful of the songs of worship.  It is divided into two parts by a change from the use of the plural pronouns (1-12) to the use of the singular (13-20).

In the first part, all the earth is called on to worship G0d because of what He has done for His people.  In the second half, the worship becomes individual and personal.  Yet the same purpose is manifest in the appeal to others to hear.

God’s dealing with nations 66:5-7:  Come and see the works of God.  He is terrible in his doing toward the children of men.  He turned the sea into dry land.  They went through the flood on foot.  There did we rejoice in Him.  He rules by his power forever.  His eyes behold the nations.  Let not the rebellious exalt themselves.  Selah.

A nation’s trial.  Yes, Israel’s trial, but also the trial of the United States of America. -  66:8-12: O bless our God, ye people, and make the voice of His praise to be heard.  Which holds our soul in life and suffers not our feet to be moved.  For you, O God, have proved us.  You have tried us, as silver is tried.  You brought us into the net.  You laid affliction upon our loins.  You have caused men to ride over our hearts.  We went through fire and through water, but you brought us out into a wealthy place.

66:13-15:  David’s debt: I will go into your house with burnt offerings.  I will pay you my vows. Which my lips have uttered, and my mouth has spoken, when I was in trouble…

66:16-20: David’s Testimony – Come and hear, all you that fear God, and I will declare what He has done for my soul. I cried unto him with my mouth, and he was extolled with my tongue.  If I regard iniquity in my heart, the LORD will not hear me.  But verily God has heard me.  He has attended to the voice of my prayer.  Blessed be God, which has not turned away my prayer, nor his mercy from me.

PSALM 67 – JOY AND BLESSING IN THE KINGDOM

67:1-3: God be merciful unto us and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us; Selah. That your way may be known upon earth, your saving health among all nations. Let the people praise you, O God, let all the people praise you.

This Missionary Psalm shows that all nations are to be blessed by the Lord.  It is a commission to the Church to take the Gospel to all nations.

This is another Harvest song and merges prayer and praise.  Prayer is its dominant note.  The singer asked for personal blessings, but its deepest passion is that all peoples may be blessed and led to praise. This reveals a desire for an international revival of all nations or we can say Harvest of souls all praising God.   I would say it is another prophetic Psalm  of the great Harvest.

67: 4-7: O let the nations be glad and sing for joy for you shall judge the people righteously, and govern the nations upon earth. Selah.  Let the people praise you, O God, let all the people praise you.  Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God even out own God, shall bless us.  God shall bless us, and all the ends of the earth shall fear him.

Mt. 24:14: And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations, and then shall the end come.

PSALM 68 – CONSUMATION OF REDEMPTION IN THE KINGDOM

Psalm 68 reveals the consummation of Redemption.  It was Israel’s Song of Triumph.

Psalm 68:1-6: Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered; let them also that hate him flee before him.  As smoke is driven away, so drive them away, as wax melts before the fire, so let the wicked perish in the presence of God.  But let the righteous be glad.  Let them rejoice before God.  Yea, let then exceedingly rejoice. Sing unto God.  Sing praises to his name.  Extol him that rides upon the heavens by his name JAH and rejoice before him.  A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation.

“Let God arise.  Let God arise, Let God arise.  Let His Enemies be scattered.  But let the righteous be glad.  Yes, let them rejoice with Gladness.  God has triumphed mightily.”

ROYAL PROGRESS  of His Majesty on High: – 68:7-18: O God, when you went forth before your people, when you did march through the wilderness; Selah.  The earth shook, the heavens also dropped at the presence of God.  Even Sinai itself was moved at the presence of God, the God of Israel.  Thou, O God, did send a plentiful rain, whereby you did confirm your inheritance, when it was weary.  Your congregation has dwelt therein.  You, O God, have prepared of your goodness for the poor.  The Lord gave the word; great was the company of those that published it.  Kings of armies did flee apace; and she that tarried at home divided the spoil.  Though you have lien among the pots, yet shall you be as the wings of a dove covered with silver, and her feathers with yellow gold.  When the Almighty scattered kings in it, it was white as snow in Salmon.  The hill of God is as the hill of Bashan, an high hill as the hill of Bashan. Why leap ye high hills?  This is the hill which god desires to dwell in.  Yea, the LORD will dwell in it forever.  The chariots of God are twenty thousand, even thousands of angels; the LORD is among them, as in Sinai, in the holy place.  You have ascended on high, You have led captivity captive.  You have received gifts for men.  Yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.

lein among the pots” is a figurative expression implying being in a low-status or humble position, possibly overlooked or surrounded by ordinary, even dirty, objects.  The verse reassures us that God can transform humble circumstances into honored positions, covered with silver (redemption) and her feathers of yellow gold (Divine Nature).  The mountain of Bashan is fruitful.

68:19-23:  Heirs of Victory:  Blessed be the LORD, who daily loads us with benefits even the God of our salvation. Selah.  He that is our God is the God of salvation; and unto GOD the LORD belong the issues from death.  But God shall wound the head of his enemies, and the hairy scalp of such a one as goes on still in his trespasses.  The LORD said, “I will bring again from Bashan,  I will bring my people again from the depths of the sea.  That your foot may be dipped in the blood of your enemies, and the tongue of your dogs in the same.”

68: 24-27: Cavalcade of Israelthey have seen your goings, O God, even the goings of my God, my King, in the sanctuary.  The singers went before the players on instruments followed after; among them were the damsels playing with timbrels.  Bless ye God in the congregations, even the LORD, from the fountain of Israel.  There is little Benjamin with their ruler, the princes of Judah and their council, the princes of Zebulun, and the princes of Naphtali.

68: 28-31: Homage of the Nations Thy God has commanded your strength; strengthen, O  God, that which you have wrought for us.  Because of your temple at Jerusalem shall kings bring presents unto you.  Rebuke the company of spearmen, the multitude of the bulls, with the calves of the people, till everyone submit himself with pieces of silver; scatter the people that delight in war.  Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God.

The war mongers, those who worship the god of fortresses (god of war) and those who purposely start wars will be judged and scattered.  Ethiopia will be saved and I would say be one of the sheep nations.

68: 32-35 – A Closing Fanfare – Sing unto God, ye kingdoms of the earth; O sing praises unto the LORD; Selah.  To him that rides upon the heavens of heavens; which were of old; lo, he does send out his voice, and that a mighty voice.  Ascribe your strength unto God; his excellency is over Israel, and his strength is in the clouds.  O God, you are terrible out of your holy places; the God of Israel is he that gives strength and power unto his people.  Blessed be God (Elohim).
