DANIEL - CHAPTER 9: 25, 26, 27
SEVEN WEEKS + THEE AND ONE HALF YEARS

Daniel 9:25: Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks and threescore and two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times (K.J.V.).
There are four events that can be taken as answering to the commandment to restore and build Jerusalem, the beginning point of Daniel’s prophecy:
1. The decree of King Cyrus of Persia for the rebuilding of the temple on, 536 B.C.
2. The decree of Darius l of Persia for Zerubbabel to continue and complete the temple, 520 B.C.
3. The decree of Artaxerses (Longimanus) of Persia for Ezra to beautify the temple and restore its worship, and to rebuild the Jewish state, 457 B.C. (Ezra 7).
4. The decree of Artaxerses (Longimanus) of Persia for Nehemiah to rebuild the city’s walls and gates, 445 B.C. (Neh. 2).
Dating from the first two of these decrees, the 70 prophetic weeks, or 490 years, would fall many years short of reaching the Christian era. Besides these edicts had reference principally to the restoration of the temple, not to the restoration of the Jewish civil state. Daniels’ prophecy states “to restore and build Jerusalem.”
A mandate was granted to Ezra by the Persian emperor Artaxerxes to go up to Jerusalem and as many people as were like-minded. This commission granted him unlimited revenue to beautify the house of God, empowered him to ordain laws, set magistrates and judges, and execute government---in other words, to “restore” the Jewish state, civil and ecclesiastical, according to the law of God and the ancient customs of the Jewish people.
Artaxerxes made this decree in the seventh year of his reign (Ezra 7:80). Ezra arrived in Jerusalem on August 1, 457 B.C. The decree went into effect in Jerusalem in the fall of 457 B.C.
Thirteen years after this (444 B.C.), in the 20th year of the same king (Neh. 1:1); Nehemiah sought and obtained permission to go up to Jerusalem. When he arrived at Jerusalem, Nehemiah found rulers and priests, nobles, and people, already engaged in the work of rebuilding Jerusalem (Neh. 2:16), acting under the decree given to Ezra 13 years before. These were “troublous times’ (Neh. 2: 8-17; 4:17). The wall was rebuilt in 52 days.
The starting point for Daniel’s prophecy of seventy weeks was Artaxerses’ decree to Ezra---457 B.C! “Seven weeks”-49 years were allotted to the building of the city and the wall from 457 B.C. to 408 B.C. This was recorded in Nehemiah 13: 23-31.
The prophecy of seventy weeks (490) years can be divided into:
1. Seven weeks ---49 years
2. Threescore and two weeks – 62 weeks or 434 years.
3. One week – seven years.
Threescore and two weeks (434 more years) take us from 408 B.C. to A.D. 27. One year must be added when going from B.C. to A.D. In A.D. 27, Jesus Christ the Messiah was 30 years of age (having been born in 4 B.C).
The Gospels record this epochal event---the inauguration of Jesus’ public ministry at His baptism in Jordan (where the Messiah received His anointing)!
Mt. 3: 15-17, (NIV): Jesus replied, Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness. Then John consented. As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on Him. And a voice from heaven said, This is My son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.
Luke 3: 21-23: And Jesus Himself began to be about thirty years of age…
Jesus was born three to four years before the beginning of the Christian Era, the year called A.D.3 or 4. Dionysius invented the calendar of the Christian Era based upon the time of the building of the city of Rome. This kind of time was called A.U.C. or simply U.C. time. Dionysius placed the birth of Christ U.C. 753. Later when it was ascertained that Herod died in U.C. 7560, Jesus’ birth was moved back to the latter part of U.C. 749, a little more than three years before A.D. 4. Therefore, Jesus Christ was 30-years of age in A.D. 27. The Child had been born in Bethlehem; the Son was given 30-years later at the Jordan (Is. 9: 6-7).
Again, we have Daniel’s prophetic preciseness of 483 years from 457 B.C. to A.D. 27.
Jesus Christ is the “Messiah the prince.” Jesus, who received this anointing of the Spirit at His public baptism (A.D. 27) informed the woman at the well (Jn. 4: 25-26) of His identify. Furthermore, Jesus confirmed this revelation with His own mouth at the synagogue in Nazareth (Lk. 4: 16-21).
The “street” mentioned in Daniel 9:25 refers to the “width avenue plaza, town square” or market-place of Jerusalem. The “wall” or “ditch, moat” (the trench cut into the rock outside the city walls), points to the troublous times of Nehemiah.
The historical and Messianic fulfillment of Daniel 9:25 has been noted. Daniel’s sixty-ninth week ended in A.D. 27 when Prince Jesus stepped down into the muddy baptismal waters of the Jordan. Daniel’s seventieth week began when “the Messiah the Prince” came up out of those same waters, anointed to dismantle the works of the devil.
The most critical week (seven years) in human history is the seventieth week of Daniel’s prophecy! The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah and the consequent outpouring of the Holy Spirit are the bases of every New Covenant reality! It was the seventieth week of Daniel’s prophecy that our adversary met his complete defeat and total demise.
And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for Himself. And He (the Messiah) shall confirm the New Covenant with man (elect Jews for one week); and in the midst of the seventieth week, He the Messiah shall cause the sacrifice and the sin offering to cease ( at Calvary’s cross).
The prophetic overtone of this verse reveals the restoration of the church from Martin Luther to the present. The New testament “street” can be found in Acts 9:11 and Revelation 21:21. The rebuilt spiritual “wall” can be discerned in Song of Solomon 8:10; Isaiah 60:18, Amos 7:7; Zechariah 2:5; Rev. 21: 12-19.
The teaching of Verses 26 & 27 would take too long to cover at this time. We will continue.
