LOTAN –Ugartic (Arabic) myth of LEVIATHAN

            King over the children of Pride

(Job. 41:34)

Leviathan is the well-known mythological serpent Lotan, known from extra-biblical literature which has seven heads (source Wikipedia). (Rev. 12:3) “And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.”

The reason I am pursuing this study beyond the Bible Teaching on Behemoth vs. Leviathan as part of our study of the Book of Job is that I feel this king of pride is the spirit oppressing our national government and is responsible for the “seething pot or caldron” and “chaos” in our executive and legislative branches.  His identity is clearly described in Job 41 as Leviathan.

The key to understanding this is found in Job 41:34: “He beholds all high things; he is a king over all the children of pride.”  As I preached on Sunday, there are two kingdoms in the world, The Kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness.  Satan is king over the kingdom of darkness.  Jesus Christ is King over the Kingdom of God.

Rev. 13 “And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea (mass of humanity), having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.  And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as the feet of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.  And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed; and the entire world wondered after the beast.  And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast; and they worshipped the beast, saying who is like unto the beast? Who is able to make war with him? And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two month.

In Job chapter 41, the dragon like crocodile is in view.  For Canaanite mythology, Lotan belonged to the forces of chaos personified by the sea and its monsters which were conquered by Canaanite gods of order, Baal Hadad. In mythology, Lotan is identified as an aspect of the god, yam.  Yam is a deity of the sea and his palace is in the abyss.

LEVIATHAN;(Job 41) satan; antichrist (son of satan); the lie; kingdom of darkness; unrighteousness; death; king over the children of pride (41:34); wild (41:1); Destructive (41:19);   9 specifics: scales, neesings, eyes, mouth, nostrils, breath, neck, flesh heart). Mouth spews out death (41:19);  strength in his neck (41:22); Covered with scales and flakes of flesh; heart of stone (41:24); Sons of perdition; creeping thing; His fraud (41:1-22); His Features (41: 13-24); His fearlessness (41: 25-34).

The mouth of this evil dragon is also described in Job 41: 19-21: “Out of his mouth go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out.  Out of his nostrils goes smoke and out of a seething pot or caldron.  His breath kindles coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth.”

Job 4:3:  “Will he make a covenant with you?  This is the covenant of death of Isaiah 28:15: “Because you have said, We have made a covenant with death (abortion), and hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us; for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves”

Isaiah 27:1 applies the name, Leviathan to the evil dragon of the last day.  “In that day the Lord with His sore and great and strong sword shall punish leviathan the piercing serpent even leviathan that crooked serpent; and He shall slay the dragon that is in the sea.”

11 Thess. 2: 4-12 describes the time of the revealing of all who oppose and exalt themselves (King of pride) above all that is called God, or that is worshiped; so that he as God sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God…for the mystery of iniquity does already work; only he who now lets will let, until he be taken out of the way.  And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.  Even him who’s coming is after the working of satan with all power and signs and lying wonders.  And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received no the love of the truth, that they might be saved.”

Job 40:19:  The sword is identified with Behemoth.  He that made him can make His sword.  Eph. 6:17: and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God.”  Heb. 4:12: “For the word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”

The Hebrew word for “leviathan” is “livyathan” (#3882, 3867), which means a wreathed animal; a serpent (especially the crocodile or some other large sea monster); the constellation of the dragon; mourning; to twist or twine; to unite; to remain; also to borrow (as a form of obligation) or cause to lend; cleave, join.” 

11 These. 2:1-3: Now we beseech you, brethren, buy the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, that you be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that they day of Christ is at hand.  Let no man deceive you by any means; for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed the son of perdition; who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called god, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sits in the temple of god, showing himself that he is God.  Remember you not, that when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now you know what withholds that he might be revealed in his time.  For the mystery of iniquity does already work; only he who now lets will let, until he be taken out of the way.  And then shall that wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.  Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, and with deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they receive not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.  And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie; that they all might be damned who believe not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.”

Leviathan’s tongue = all lies

“Bore his jaw through with a thorn” = Crown of Thorns at Calvary crucified Satan in the flesh.

Will he break soft (or flattering) words unto you? 

John 8:44: You are of your father the devil and the lusts of your father you will do.  He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him.  When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it.

God will expose the lie, and will reveal the truth.

Teeth – metaphorically represent power.

His scales are his pride (his defense mechanisms), shut up together as with a close seal (mark of the Beast).  One is so near to the other that no air can come between them.  They are joined one to another and they stick together, that they cannot be sundered.   In Job. 41:7, only barbed iron will break through his tough scales.  This would be the rod of judgment and the rod of iron which the King of Glory will carry in Rev. 19.

 By his neesings (“sneezing”) a light does shine and his are like the eyelids of the morning.  Out of his mouth go burning lamps and sparks of fire as out of a seething pot or cauldron (witches brew).  In his neck (self-will) remains strength and sorrow is turned into joy before him (“fear, leaps before him as he goes”).  His heart is firm as a stone, yes, as hard as a piece of the nether millstone.”

He beholds all high things; he is a king over all the sons of Pride.  The god and the prince of this world (Jn. 12:31; 11 Cor. 4:4) He is king over all the proud beasts (JPS) “Over all the pride of earth he reigns supreme” (Knox); “Of all the beasts, he is the proudest-monarch of all he sees,” (Living bible) such is the description of the son of perdition, doomed for defeat and destruction when the Lord shall consume him with the spirit of his World system.  Just as Pharaoh was the god and king of Egypt.

Pharaoh, like satan is called “the great dragon.” (29:3) As this is figurative of the natural or carnal mind (a worldly mind); this gives us some insight to the metaphorical dragon of scripture.

Ez. 29:2-5:  Son of man, set your face against Pharaoh king of Egypt, and prophesy against him and against all Egypt:  Speak, and say, thus says the Lord God; ‘Behold I am against you, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lies in the midst of his rivers, which has said, My river is my own, and I have it for myself.  But I will put hooks in your jaws, and I will cause the fish of your rivers to stick unto your scales, and I will bring you up out of the midst of your rivers; you shall fall upon the open fields; you shall not be brought together, nor gathered:  I have given you for meat to the beasts of the field and to the fowls of the heavens.”

These chapters prefigure the Day of the Lord in an eschatological sense.  Historically it was when Nebuchadnezzar conquered Israel.  Prophetically it is the time of the judgment of the nations.  At the same time this judgment is released, there will be the exaltation of the Horn (National Power) of Israel and Spiritual Israel, the Church.

It is out of the Lord's mouth that a sharp Sword that will bring the judgment by the Lord Himself.

Rev. 19: 11-21:  And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he does judge and make war.  His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.  And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood; and his name is called, THE WORD OF GOD.  AND OUT OF HIS MOUTH GOES A SHARP SWORD, THAT WITH IT HE SHOULD SMITE THE NATIONS; AND HE SHALL RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON; AND HE TREADS THE WINEPRESSE OF THE FIERCENESS AND WRATH OF ALMIGTHY GOD.  And he has on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; that you may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.  And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies gathered together to make war against him that say on the horse, and against his army.  And the beast was taken and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.  And the remnant was slain with the sword of Him that saw upon the horse which SWORD PROCEEDED OUT OF HIS MOUTH; AND ALL THE FOWLS WERE FILLED WITH THEIR FLESH.”

Rev. 16:13-15:  And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs come out of the MOUTH OF THE DRAGON, and out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.

The mouth of the dragon according to Ezekiel 29:3 is the spirit of Pharaoh, the serpent of Genesis 3:14, who is the fiery red serpent of Isaiah and the dragon of Rev. 16.  Pharaoh, like Satan is called, “the Great Dragon.”  Egypt reveals the principle of the bondage of the sin of the world.  Satan is the god and prince of the world system.

The beast of Rev. 16, is the world system of Daniel 7:7-8 “After this I saw in the night visions, and behold a fourth beast, dreadful and terrible and strong exceedingly; and it had great iron teeth: it devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue with the feet of it: and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it: and it had ten horns.  I considered the horns, and behold, there came up among them another little horn, before whom there were three of the first horns plucked up by the roots; and behold in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man and a mouth that speaking great things. This is the world system controlled by the Great Dragon personified in the person of anti-christ.  We are presently dealing with this BEAST through the mouth of the liberal media.  Our prayer is to close the mouth of the Beast.

Job 41:19:  “Out of his mouth (Leviathan) go burning lamps, and sparks of fire leap out, Out of his nostrils goes smoke, and out of a seething pot or caldron.  His breath kindles coals, and a flame goes out of his mouth.  (Leviathan – the beast from the sea – the king over all the children of pride – satan).  

In Ez. 27, we studied the lament over the ruin of Tyre.  This passage dwells on the worldwide trade, commerce and material wealth of Tyre.  Through the chapter Tyre is likened to a ship that is well outfitted, wrongly piloted, and ultimately shipwrecked.  Tyre speaks of the principle of trafficking and merchandising, the pomp and pride of the satanic world system.  God judged Tyre because of her delight in Jerusalem’s overthrow.  She refused to help Jerusalem, being filled with pride.   Those who bought and sold with Tyre exemplify the Mark of the Beast of (Rev. 13: 13-18.)

(Ez. 18: 20-26) I believe we can liken the unclean spirits of the frogs to Zidon.  It was founded by Canaan’s firstborn (Gen. 10:15) Apparently Sidon was the headquarters of the idolatry connected with Baal, Ashtaroth, and Tammuz.  These are the spirits associated with the 13 sins of the Canaanite Curse:

Daniel 7: 11-14:  I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spoke: I beheld even till the beast was slain, and his body destroyed, and given to the burning flame.  As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their dominion taken away: yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time.  I saw in the night visions, and, behold one like the son of Man came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days, and they brought him near before him.  And there were given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.”

Ez. 32:12:  “The proud Egyptian ruler considered himself to be a Lion, (a proud beast), but he was only a sea monster to be caught in a net.  His pride caused him to be lowered into the futility of the realm of death and corruption.  His pride was the pomp of Egypt.  His land, (32:15) his mind and body, became desolate with the law of sin and death.” 

Ez. 32:18:  “Son of man wail for the multitude of Egypt, and cast them down, even her, and the daughters of the famous nations unto the nether parts of the earth with them that go down in the pit.”

The Lord God is moving upon the nation of the United States of America.   The Lord has spoken in His Word and it shall come to pass and all the nations of the earth will know that He is the Lord God.

Job 4:9: “by the blast of God they perish, and by the breath of his nostrils are they consumed.” (11 Thess. 2:8) Then shall the wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.

As sons of God and part of the Body of Christ, it is our commission to preach and declare the gospel of the Kingdom of God.  How shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him?  He is upholding all things by the word of his power, Hebrews 1:  “But unto the son he said, your throne, O God is for ever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of your kingdom… And you, Lord, in the beginning have laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of your hands.

For me the revelation of the spirit of Lotan gives more insight into the dragon of the Book of Revelation and the arrogance of the king of pride oppressing this nation as well as pushing the nations of the world toward a one world government.  The Lord Jesus Christ will rule all nations.
