'WITH HIS STRIPES WE ARE HEALED"

"WITH HIS STRIPES WE ARE HEALED

"Preached by:  Carolyn SissomSunday Evening ServiceSeptember 20, 2009 Isa. 53: 4-5:  “Surely He has born our grief, and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem Him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.  But He was wounded for our transgressions.  He was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon Him; and with His stripes we are healed. These verses look back to the Servant’s humiliation depicted in terms of sickness.  The natural reaction to such sufferings it to turn away from the sufferer; but more than that, it was commonplace in the world of ancient Israel to reject and despise people in deep suffering.  It was viewed as a sure sign of God’s displeasure, as the Book of Job testifies. But a very different explanation is given for the Servant’s humiliation – so different that the onlookers are incredulous at the news.  They are forced to review their thinking not only because of what they are told, but because of the Arm of the Lord.  Who has believed our report?  And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? (53:1) Isaiah knew when he prophesied this, that people would not believe him.  The description of the Cross is so clear it is as if  he wrote it standing under the Cross.  Jesus identified with the family of man and took upon himself every bit of our grief, pain and sickness, all of which are the result of sin and the curse.  He took it, swallowed it up, and removed it.  He put it away.   Reason is contrary to Faith which is required to receive the provision of His finished work.  The blows that fell on him have brought us healing:  There are various means of administering divine healing:  I have listed ten (10).  If there are others, there is no intent to limit the Gifts of Healings.  These are also listed in the sermon notes of Gifts of Healings.  I will  identify an 11th one today through the appropriation of the Blood through Faith and the Holy Spirit. In the same manner in which the Lord made provision to break all curses off of our life, we have that same provision through “with His stripes we are healed.”.
  1. Laying on of hands. (Mark 7:32) “They brought unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they asked him to put his hand upon him.” I counted eight (8) cases in the Bible where Jesus touched people and they were healed.
  2. The spoken Word.  (Ps. 107:20) “He sent his Word and healed them.” Demonstrated by Jesus when he healed the Centurion’s servant. (Mt. 8: 5-13)
Three kinds of people came to Jesus for healing.(a)   Those who came for healing personally.(b)   Those who brought someone else for healing.(c)    Those who came and sought only His spoken Word.
  1. The elders anoint with oil and pray.  Is any sick among you, let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.” (James 5:14)
  2. The prayer of Faith.  And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”
  3. The Lord’s Supper (1 Cor. 11:23-30)” For he that eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.  For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.”
  4. Through a point of contact (Mark 6:56) “And wherever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.”  This is the covenant of the ribband of blue (Numbers 15:37-40) There are many instances where people touched Jesus and were healed.   (Mark 3:10)  Sea of Galilee:  “He healed many, so that as many as had afflictions pressed about Him to touch Him.”

  1. By handkerchiefs and aprons (Acts 19: 11-12) “And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:  so that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons, and they diseases departed from them, and the evil spirits went out of them.”

  1. By casting out devils (Luke 8:26-39)

  1.   By gifts of healings (1 Cor. 12:9) this is through those who have been anointed as Healers.  I believe this would be inclusive of the medical profession as well as those who minister Divine Healing.
Here in these verses of Isaiah, we are shown the appropriating power of the blood from the stripes of Jesus for our Healing. It was Jewish Law that when someone suffered that person must be at fault.   In some denominations, this doctrine of transmission of guilt is still taught.  Jesus challenged this is John 9:1 “As He went along, he saw a man blind from birth.  His disciples asked him, “Rabbi who sinned this man or his parents, that he was born blind?  Neither the man nor his parents sinned, said Jesus.  But this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.” Jesus emphatically repudiates any notion that there is a direct or casual connection between his blindness and sin.   The right attitude in suffering is not a reason for imputing guilt, but an occasion for the revealing of God’s glory. Jesus died for all men who will receive Him.  He has redeemed us from the curse of the law—from sin, sickness, poverty and death.  He is the surety of new Covenant which he established upon His death and resurrection. Jesus has carried the burden of man’s sin.  He lifted sin up from off man and carried it away.  He did more than cover it.  He moved it!  He took the sin of leprosy unto Himself.  In the O.T., leprosy was a judgment for sin.   His suffering was the penalty due and remedy by which Spirit, Mind and Body of man is provided for in His atonement.the prayer of Faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up.  If he as committed sins, they shall be forgive him. For the Christian, we do not have to carry around any burden of sin that would bring sickness upon us.  For those who reject the Lord, all they have to do is repent.  Healing is the children’s Bread.   Mark 7: 24-30:  And from there He arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into a house, and would have no man know it; but He could not be hid.  For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit heard of Him, and came and fell at His Fee:  The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought Him that He would cast forth the devil our of her daughter.  But Jesus said to her, Let the children first be filled; for it is not meet to take the children’s bread, and cast it to the dogs.  And she answered and said to Him, Yes, Lord; yet the dogs under the table eat of the children’s crumbs.  And he said to her, for this saying go your way; the devil is gone out of your daughter.” Jesus extended Healing to not only the Jews, but to the nations of the world.   His life, incarnation and redemption brought truths to light which men has never considered.  Such love had never been demonstrated. The healing and cleansing of the nations will be affected by a people who have their image and attitude changed.  They will no longer condemn those who are suffering, but offer salvation and healing through the Blood of Jesus. Isa. 53:15:  So shall He sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at Him; for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.” Those who walk in the Spirit and repentance of sins are not under condemnation. Rev. 22: “And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of god and of the Lamb.  In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the  river, was there the tree of live, which bore twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.  And there shall be no more curse; but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve Him: Carolyn Sissom, PastorEastgate Ministries, Inc.www.eastgateministries.com
