THE LORD'S PRAYER

THE LORD’S PRAYER

Pastor Carolyn Sissom

Matthew 6:10 and Lk. 11:2

Thy Kingdom Come, Thy Will be Done on Earth as it is in Heaven

Jhn 18:36 - Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

Jesus came preaching the Kingdom of God and established God’s Kingdom on earth through His Gospel and the Holy Spirit.  The Apostles were sent forth preaching the Kingdom of God.   We are to pray for God’s Kingdom to come in us that we be brought into obedience to all the character and ordinances of Father God’s Kingdom on earth as it is in Heaven. Jesus Christ promised, surely I come quickly.  Our hearts should answer, Even so, come, Lord Jesus.  What God promised, Jesus delivered, and the Holy Spirit produces. We are to pray and apprehend His Kingdom on earth as it is in heaven.

Jesus taught us to pray:

Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen. (Mt. 6: 11-13)

Even as a child, I prayed this nightly as most of you did.  I always felt that this prayer asking the Lord to lead me not into temptation, kept me out of a lot of trouble growing up.  I can remember contemplating each verse and what it meant.  I don’t pray it as often as I used to, but I believe it is embedded in my soul.

One day, as Jesus was in prayer, one of his disciples came to him as he finished and said, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. (Lk. 11:1)

Matthew chapter 6 gives us more detail of Jesus’ instructions to His disciples on how to pray:

“Examine your motives to make sure you’re not showing off when you do your good deeds, only to be admired by others; otherwise you will lose your reward of your heavenly Father.  So when you give to the poor don’t announce it and make a show of it just to be seen by people, like the hypocrites in the streets and in the marketplace.  They have already received their reward!  But when you demonstrate generosity, do it with pure motives and without drawing attention to yourself.  Give secretly and your Father who sees all you do will reward your openly.

Whenever you pray, be sincere and not like the pretenders who love the attention they receive while praying before others in the meetings and on street corners.  Believe me; the have already received their reward!  But when you demonstrate generosity, do it with pure motives and without drawing attention to yourself.  Give secretly and your Father who sees all you do will reward you openly.

Whenever you pray, go into your innermost chamber and be alone with Father God, praying to him in secret.  And your Father who sees all you do will reward you openly.  When you pray, there is no need to repeat empty phrases, praying like those who don’t know God, for they expect God to hear them because of their many words.  There is no need to imitate them, since your Father already knows what you need before you ask him.  Pray like this:” (Passion Translation – Mt. 6: 5-9)

Lord’s Prayer in the Passion Translation:

“Our Father, dwelling in the heavenly realms,

May the glory of your name

Be the center on which our lives turn.

Manifest your kingdom realm,

And cause your every purpose to be fulfilled on earth,

Just as it is fulfilled in heaven.

We acknowledge you as our Provider

Of all we need each day.

Forgive us the wrongs we have done as we ourselves

Release forgiveness to those who have wronged us.

Rescue us every time we face tribulation

And set us free from evil.

For you are the King who rules

With power and glory forever. Amen.”

“And when you pray, make sure you forgive the faults of others so that your Father in heaven will also forgive you.  But if you withhold forgiveness from others, your Father withholds forgiveness from you.” (Mt. 6:8-15)

Our Father who art in Heaven: “Our Creator, our preserver, our provider, who is good and gracious to all; the Father of our Lord Jesus and of us in Him, your children by adoption and grace.  Not my Father only, but the Father of the universe, of human beings and the angels of heaven.  You will heaven and earth with your glory and behold all things in heaven and earth, knowing every creature and creation in all its works.  You know every possible event from everlasting to everlasting.  The Almighty Lord and ruler of all.” (John Wesley)

Hallowed be Thy name”
May You be duly honored, loved, feared, by all in heaven and in earth, by all angels and all people!  When we pray to Our Father, we declare to Him, Holy is His name.

“Thy kingdom come”
May Your kingdom come quickly and swallow up all the kingdoms of the earth!
May all people revere You, O Christ, for their King and truly believe in Your name.
May they be filled with righteousness, peace, joy, holiness, and happiness
Till they are removed into Your kingdom of glory to reign with You forever.

“Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven”
May all inhabitants of the earth do Your will as willingly as the holy angels!
May these do it continually… without any interruption of  willing service…
O Spirit of grace… make us perfect in every good work to do Your will,
And work in each of us all that is well pleasing in Your sight!

“Give us today our daily bread

We ask for our daily bread, which teaches us not to take thought for the morrow but constantly to depend upon the Lord as our provider.  If the Lord removed his grace from the richest and greatest of men, they could be beggars on the street except for the mercy of God for their daily bread.  The Lord provided manna for the Egyptians one day at a time to teach them that God alone is our daily provider.

Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.  We must pray for daily pardon, as duly as we pray for daily bread.  Satan will continually try to deceive people with offense.  If we don’t take offense or receive offense, then even if we are mistreated by our debtors, we are walking free in the liberty of Christ Jesus.

Our sins are our debts; there is a debt of duty, which, as creatures, we owe to our Creator.  We must forbear, forgive, and forget the affronts put upon us, and the wrongs done us.  This is a moral law of God for our righteousness, peace and joy.  Without this forgiveness, we are not walking in the Kingdom of God.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  The devil is the tempter.  Keep us that we may not be assaulted from the evil thing, sin,  that evil things which God hates, and which Satan tempts men to and destroys them by.  We will never “arrive” at a place of sanctification while in this earth suit that Satan will not continually try to trip us up with temptation and trick us to fall into a trap of evil.  The attempts will be subtle and will always convince you that whatever it is that your flesh desires is a higher law than the Holy Word of God.

Whenever we are tempted, O Lord who helps our infirmities,
Do not allow us to be overcome or suffer loss by it,
But make a way for us to escape so that we may be more than conquerors,
Through Your love, over all sin and the consequences of it.” (John Wesley)

“For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory”
[Yours is] the sovereign right of all things that are or ever were created.
[Yours is] the executive power, whereby You govern all things in Your everlasting kingdom.
[Yours is] the praise due from every creature… for all your wondrous works…
Which endure through all ages,
  (John Wesley)

forever. Amen

“Our personal prayer life is not intended as a memory-jogger for God, but as a means by which the Christian’s desires are brought under God’s scrutiny, and the one who prays is reminded of the character, will and purposes of God.” (H. L. Ellison)

The cost will be what we think we want.  I can promise you that God’s purposes for our lives are so much higher, wider, and more wonderful than you and I can every conceive in the lusts of our flesh.

Unchecked Copy BoxMat 6:3 - But when you give to someone in need, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

Left hand/right hand is a vivid expression implying absolute secrecy.  Judaism insisted on charity being kept secret so as to give dignity to those in need.  It should be such a secret that we forget when we help someone in need with no strings attached.

Matthew 6:19-24: Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust does corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

But lay up for yourself treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust does corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:

For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. The light of the body is the eye: if therefore your eye is single, your whole body shall be full of light.

But if your eye be evil, your whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness! No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Money is not a sin, but many have lost their soul because they have not fixed their eyes on God (heaven); but have their eyes fixed on money.  It is wonderful to know there will be no money in Heaven.  What joy!  I don’t expect that as long as we are on earth, that money will lose its value in our economy.  But Praise God, I am in the economy of Heaven.  By that I live mentally in God’s economy.  Yes, I have to steward God’s money, but it is not my worry.

“The man who fixes his eyes on God (heaven), will give generously without second thought.  The man who tries to look at God, and the world at the same time will see neither clearly, in fact he will not see at all.” (H. L. Ellison)

“This is why I tell you to never be worried about your life, for all that you need will be provided, such as food, water, and clothing---everything your body needs.  Isn’t there more to your life than a meal?  Isn’t your body more than clothing?” (P.T.)

Worry:

  1. Sinful and produces fear.
  2. Borrowing trouble that cannot be paid back.
  3. A disease causing other ills.
  4. Brooding over what may never happen
  5. Creating trouble, misery, death.
  6. A burden borrowed from tomorrow and others who should carry it.
  7. Weight that kills prematurely.
  8. Mental and physical suicide.
  9. A grave digger that has no sympathy
  10. Needless and wastes time and effort that should be spent on worth-while things.
  11. A robber of faith, peace, and trust in a never-failing heavenly Father.
  12. A stumbling-block for others.
  13. A disgrace to God and should never be indulged in by Christians.
  14. Anxiety over what is nothing today and less tomorrow, in view of faith.
  15. Anticipating trouble, which seldom come to those who trust God.
  16. Torment over something that will likely be a blessing if it comes.
  17. Living like an orphan without a heavenly Father.
  18. A crime against God, man, nature, and better judgment.
  19. Mental cruelty to self and others.
  20. Foolish for whatever is going to happen cannot be stopped by worry; and if it doesn’t happen, there is nothing to worry about.  Should adversities a come, one may still be victorious by trusting in God. (F.J. Dake – Mt. 6)

“Look at all the birds---do you think they worry about their existence?  They don’t plant or reap or store up food, yet your heavenly Father provides them each with food.  Aren’t you much more valuable to your Father than they?  So which one of you by worrying could add one cubit unto his stature?

Why would you worry about your clothing?  Look at the beautiful flowers of the field.  They don’t work or toil, and yet not even Solomon in all his splendor was not robed in beauty more than one of these.  So if God has clothed the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is cast into the oven, won’t he provide for you the clothes you need---even though you live with such little faith?

So then forsake your worries!  Why would you say, What will we eat? Or what will we drink? Or What will we wear?  For this is what the unbelievers chase after.  Doesn’t your heavenly Father already know the things your bodies require?

The behavior of bird and flower is that allotted them in creation.  Man is not intended to imitate them, but to fulfill his role in creation.  The pagans do not know God’s order of creation nor do they know God’s economy,   The plant life, birds and animal kingdom know by their nature the economy of God for their survival.

When the morrow brings problems of the unknown, it will also bring the answer to them.

Mat 6:33 - But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
